HP.com does not offer notebooks with i7-920XM or the i7-930. Does this mean it is not compatible?
I see that microcenter is offering a i7-930 for $200.00. Is it possible that I can buy this processor and shove it into any HP laptop that comes with a i7 processor?

I guess what I am trying to figure out is what is compatible and is swappable. Are there desktop and laptop versions of the i7 processors?
If so, what is the BEST i7 out there for laptops as of now?

For example, RAM for desktop is NOT the same for laptops... etc...

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

YOu can't put a 930 in because it's a desktop processor, i7-920XM is a mobile processor so you can shove it down as long as the bios supports it (i think it should), but the cost is alot higher because it's a mobile processor. The only laptops you can fit in a desktop processor is the Clevo's workstation laptop lineup.

there are notebook and desktop-specific cpus.

to say that there are desktop and notebook versions of specific cpus is oversimplifying.

do some browsing at ark.intel.com, pull up the socket types, thermals, etc, etc for desktop and notebook cpus.

The 930, as said is a desktop processor only. You will not physically fit it in in, as it uses a completely different socket to the mobile versions of the i7 (LGA 1366), plus, the heat generated by a desktop i7 is quite a lot, it is not likely that a standard HP Envy or Dv(*)t series cooling system is likely to be able to handle the heat generated. Only very large, thick notebooks, with multiple fans will have a desktop i7, such as the Clevo D900F/Sager NP9280.

The reason HP does not have the 920XM as an option is probably because it is hotter than the already hot 820QM and 720QM. Plus, it's insanely expensive for the slight performance boost you get over the 820QM. The Intel Core i7 920XM is currently the best mobile i7 processor out there. Remember, the i7's available in a Clevo D900F are desktop processors.
