    Hello everybody,
I am gonna buy a laptop soon. I was thinking of going for Intel Core 2 Duo,but it will cost more. I have googled around and selected some laptop models. So in those my next options are 'Intel Dual Core (2GHz)' and 'AMD Athlon 64 X2 QL-60 (1.9GHz). Can anybody please tell me which one among these has better performance?
(I will be using laptop for internet browsing, progaramming stuff like MATLAB,JAVA etc. Also I ll be loading LINUX in it).
    Thank You. :)

The Intel will perform better, the main reason to get it is you'll be programming and that can require more horsepower.

EDIT: my bad, didn't read close enough, thought it was a C2D.

If it's a Pentium dual core, they're going to be pretty close.

Ya.. It's Pentium Dual Core. Not Core 2 Duo... The situation is, if i go for AMD I will get 2GB ram 250GB HDD lappy for 37K bucks and if I go for Pentium Dual Core I will get 1GB,160GB for the same price. In my friends circle nobody has good opinion about AMD.. (nobody is using, just a prejudice it seems.. ;-) )

Can you suggest what will be good for me, please?

Well RAM and HDD you can always change yourself if the need arises.

On the other hand, the rest of the computer's specs might vary. For the QL-60, I'm guessing the GPU will either be an Nvidia 8200M or an ATI HD3200, which are both noticeably better than the Intel GPU which will probably be in the Pentium Dual Core machine(correct me if I'm wrong though). Although you aren't gaming, for the "bang for your buck", if what I said above is correct, then the QL-60 machine would be a better money's worth.

AMD isn't bad, it's just that their multi-core technology isn't as efficient as Intel's yet. In the single core department, AMD was better than Intel for a noticeable period of time.

The QL-60 is AMD's new Puma platform though, so it should be relatively similar to the Pentium Dual Core(which is it's Intel equivalent anyways).

All in all, I'd say get the QL-60, you won't really notice that much of a difference between these 2 CPUs IMO.

I agree with Melody for the reasons Melody stated. The Puma platform w/HD3200 bests the 8400m.

Get the AMD. It will perform a bit better. But I do suggest a core 2 duo

Go with AMD the platform the amd laptop is on is better then the intel one plus with the extra 1gb of ram it will be faster.

Go with the AMD, you get a better HD and more Memory too, for the same price, the Pentium Dual Core is Intel's "budget" line of processors, and won't really perform any better than the AMD processor.

AMD QL-60 is the better of the processors, if cpu upgrading is not on your plate in the future.

    I'd have to agree.

Part of the problem in comparing AMD vs Intel is the difference in clock speeds vs actual speed. An AMD will perform faster in normal tasks than a higher clocked Intel because AMD tends towards efficiency per clock cycle. Intels have higher clock speeds, so excel in raw number crunching. But in budget processors where the MHz gap is smaller, I tend to prefer AMD(As well as AMD having "better" budget processors due to a general lower price on all processors.)

As well, I've noticed that AMDs tend to make memory intensive processes faster(at least that's always been my experience in the laptop world. Might be all in my head, I dunno)

You are right.. It comes with ATI HD3xxx GPU and in 'Dual Core' it is Intel GPU.

Performormance may be equal but they say in a long run AMD's will create troubles, where as Intels are reliable... Please correct me. Thank you all for such
    a good response.. :)

Ya.. You r right.. QL-60 comes wid ATI HD3xxx and DualCore comes with Intel GPU... Also I am not using it for gaming. But I need good Linux support.
(I am talking about HP and Lenovo laptops, hope, they have good Linux support)

One more thing, If I go for Acer I can get D2C within my budget.. But how good is it when compared to HP or Lenovo?

This USED to be true (e.g. Athlon vs P4), but hasn't been the case for some time now. Intel is both more efficient and powerful pound for pound these days. That being said, the difference between these processors is probably pretty marginal, and it looks like a better deal all around for the model with the AMD processor.

For the same price tag AMD tend to be a little faster than intel. In the laptop arena AMD is behind because it doesn't have any high end products, and because they can't for some reason use high frequencies as intel.
Overall their low budget and mid budget solutions are as good as intel. Plus usually they are cheaper.

I would say this to the OP ; go with the AMD laptop, it will be faster than the intel equivalent (for the same price). The extra ram will make your laptop/vista run smother. The graphics will allow you even to play some games, and the bigger HDD will allow you to to store more files.

Unless you buy second hand, you shouldn't attemp to upgrade a new laptop to avoid voiding the warranty.
