I just got one and noticed the outer antistatic bag is somewhat messy with what seem to be fingernail marks. Is this normal? My first drive was really clean, but this one is somewhat messy and I can't help but think I got a used drive, even though the sticker is still sealed. May be I'm just too paranoid? If anyone has a similar experience, please post. Thx.

Why not install it and see what SMART attributes you get in CDI?

Intel Toolbox will give you a lot of information too.

I am afraid to open it up since it can't be returned if I open it, but I guess that's the only way. Will try. Thx folks. :)

There's literally no way to tell if it's beed used or not, otherwise.

From where did you buy it? Unless you check the SMART attributes, you're only other option would be to hire a psychic, which would be much less reliable.

I bought from a private seller. According to the sticker, the drive was manufactured early April. That's more than 5 months ago.

I think you're too paranoid. If the package is sealed, and the drive looks / acts / behaves new, then I wouldn't worry about it.

To me, the important part isn't whether the item is used. In my experience, a new/used computer part isn't a good indicator of reliability. What matters to me is whether the warranty is intact. And in your case, it would be.

One more question. Both of my boxes weren't sealed. Only one side was sealed with the Intel sticker with specs on it and the other end not sealed. Is that normal?

I started this thread because one of them is really messy and I am hesitant to open it since there would be no returning afterward. Oh well, I guess I will run some tests this weekend and go from there.

You mean you could take out the SSD w/o breaking a seal? That would be a bad sign.

First run the toolbox or CDI. We still don't know if it was actually used.

If you're absolutely not sure, totally worried that it may have been used and still are able to return it for a full refund, then return it and buy it from a place that does have a return policy. If you are unable to return it, even if unopened, then you have nothing to lose by trying it.

My first X25-M, from Best Buy, came in a full retail box. I later returned it for a full refund after 28 days of heavy usage. I purchased its replacement on amazon.com and received just the drive in its internal packaging (the small cardboard box inside the cardboard box inside the retail box). It's been perfectly fine.

I would assume that it was sealed on both ends. It makes no sense to seal only one. All you need to do is install the Intel SSD Toolbox and select "Check SMART Attributes". Line E1 - Host Writes will tell you all you need to know.
