I have a 13" Sony Vaio with a Intel GS45 chipset. I have seen the same setup on other laptops which run the Intel 4500HD graphics card + a Nvidia card. Does anyone know if Im able to add a descreet video card to this thing?

Uhh, thats not too discreet. Is there anyone in here that is familiar with the Intel GS45 chipset and how laptop production works. Does every vendor have its own production motherboards? Im not too knowledgable when it comes to laptops. I just want to know if my system has the same hardware as the Asus UL50 and UL80 minus the Nvidia card, am I able to add an Nvidia card?

No. Pretty much every model has it's own specific motherboard. There are a few models that will share motherboards, but in general, a motherboard for one model notebook will not fit in another. Moral Hazard just posted a way to modify your notebook to accept a desktop graphics card, which is really only useful in a fixed setting. Basically, unless there's a version of your Vaio that has switchable graphics with the 4500HD and a Nvidia card, there will be no way to add one after the fact. And even if there is a version, if it doesn't use the same motherboard, you're still stuck. Generally, the only easy upgrades to a notebook are RAM, hard drive, sometimes CPU, and (very) occasionally a video card... and that's usually only possible on the more expensive, boutique notebooks.

Thank you for both of your posts. The external card link was an interesting read.
