I can't seam to get any kind of reply for this upgrade question. Can anybody on this forum simply reply if they or sombody they know have a onboard Intel Wi-Fi Link "N" model 4965AGN working on an Intel 945GM chipset notebook

I'd really just lke to know if anybody knows if this kind of hardware upgrade is possable for an Inel based 945GM notebook (Toshiba A105) wich has currently Wi-Fi "G" model 3945ABG. I understand the 3 wire antenna issue and willing to mod to work.

Somebody on eBay thought it may not work due to the chipset. If this is true, can I get link to confirm?

    Thaankx again

If you look here Intel indicates the 945GM chipset can handle the 4965AGN card no problem. You should be ok to upgrade I think.

WOW, thankx for the reply. I posted several versions of this question on various sections of this forum and nobody either wanted to reply or had a clue.

I am really surprised that in over 8 months of Wi-Fi N for notebooks that nobody (on this forum) with a 1yea old+ 945GM Calistoga would have want to upgrade to "N" by now.

Actually it is my understanding that the adapter will work fine from just 2 antennas. Certain functions may not work fully if at all but the card itself will do it's job.

eBay, for $30.00 - $50.00 new and used pulls. This of corse can be ordered from Dell, Gateway or Sony, but you may pay more and they will not likely help if they know you are doing a self mod upgrade sice opening most units voids warrenty. Furthermore, most people can't grasp the concept of upgrading a notebook and if the part doesn't say "for your model" in plain text, they are lost. Just humer them and order as replacement for a known model by that maker. For those like mine over 1.5yrs old, no warrenty to bother with, open and go for it.

Update: I know nobody wanted to bother with my post but I did it myself and can confirm the 945 express chipset Toshiba (and most likely many others) can handle the Intel 4965 AGN and the newer 5100 AGN as well. Installed and worked with no issues and performs great. The 5100 is a complete drop in upgrade for many 3945ABG cards as it uses the 2 wire antenna. The upgrade to the 4965 AGN and wimax 5350 require the 3 wire upgrade and is easy to do.

Thanks for the update. So what did you do for the third wire?

    cool,
I may check out the 5100 two antenna card as an upgrade to my 3945a/b/g card.
Did you notice any kind of performance increase of range increase from the newer cards?

I havent really used the upgraded unit as a regular to tell for sure how much improvement. But in general, just networking on home and office wifi at N is faster and better for streaming video in general off the net and home network. It does appear to have better power management if used under Vista.

As for the 3rd wire. I used the actual wire from boxed Intel wimax card. but any cmpatable antenna wire can be fitted and then loomed through the lid. I followed the patter of the other 2 in the monitor surround.

Thanks for the info, I will see how much trouble there is to open up the lid.

I noticed most of the 5300/5350 cards on eBay don't come with the wire.
