So I heard some rumours about the Intel Quad Core and Nvidia GeForce 9000 series being prepped for laptops.

My friend told me about it since I was about to buy a Dell XPS M1730, but want the best it can be and he told me to wait since these 2 might be coming out.

Anything definitive? I did some googling but most of it was "maybe's" and "Perhaps Q4" etc.

You won't get anything better than "maybe" and "perhaps Q4" out of anyone other than a potential scam artist - nothing is definitive until released. However, if you're interested in Quadcore and 9xxx series, you might also check some of the Clevo resellers listed in the Sager/Clevo forum; I believe that some of them at least will be offering such a combo if it can be made to work.

Is a Mid ranged GF 9xxx going to be better than the GF 8800M GTX?

I'm just wondering whether it's worth the wait. My current desktop which used to be amazing for gaming, is now 4 years old and getting slow. It keeps overheating when playing CoD4 and it didn't even do that just a couple of months ago.

I'm tired of not being able to play with my friends (I'm itching to play Age of Conan, especially since I pre-ordered and I've had it for a while but can't play it).

I just wanted to know if there's a massive difference and it's worth the x month wait, or if I should just get it now.

Mid range 9xxx is not better than 8800GTX IMHO.

i seriously doubt that this guy's friend telling him to not buy a laptop today and wait until Q4 makes him a scam artist...

that was a pretty random thing to say.

    ---

to answer your question, you should be aware that new laptop and computer tech is coming out ALL THE TIME. whenever you decide to buy, something new will come out in a matter of months.

the best strategy is to BUY WHEN YOU NEED IT. not a moment earlier nor later. if you need a laptop today, you buy it today, and you can't wait till Q4. if you need it by the end of the year, get it then. but even if you wait for 6 months for the next big thing, the NEXT next big thing will only be another 6 months away.

We will not be seeing current quad cores in anything but special desktop replacement notebooks that use desktop components.

The next generation of mobile processors will have a quad core, but it requires a completely new socket. Current laptops will not be able to use it.

I would buy a 700 dollar laptop and build a desktop with the remaining money...
    say.
    Core2Quad Q6700 2.66ghz
    4gb ram
    500gb hdd
    SLi 9800GTX or CrossFire 4850's.
shouldn't cost alot more then 1200 or so.

Ah thanks guys, that was very helpful.

You see, it's just because I'm in a bit of a band.

I'm very much a gamer, and currently my rig is dying on me and I haven't been able to game as much as I'd like.

I'm moving out of the house in January but I'll be travelling a lot between Spain and Denmark so I have to have something "portable" but that I can game on.

So it's either, don't game anything until January but perhaps get something even better or get the best that's out now (which is very good) and be able to game.

As a general rule, never wait for new technology unless its going to be next week. there is always something newer and better comming out. Buy whatever suits your need and enjoy it, keeping mind that 6 month down the road, your "best of the best" gaming rig will be behind. thats just how things work in high tech electronics

I don't know, I think I may end going for the XPS M1730 sooner rather than later.

It seems to me that the Clevo/Sagers you can get from the retailers are stupidly overpriced, and I'm not really interested in buying a secondhand laptop either. And, although being an Alienware owner myself, I'm not interested in the m15/17x anymore after those horrendous reviews.

the scam artist thing had to do with pcmw who keeps telling customers that it will be out... well.. technically right now lol. Shyster good job on recommending the best systems and for those who forget thats the clevo. Check them out. There is a new M570TU which will have everything you are looking for eventually. as in as soon as the parts come out pretty much.
