Intel T5750 vs. Intel T8300

I'm upgrading from the T5750 to the T8300.

What kind of performance increase should I expect going into the Penryn platform? What major differences will I hopefully see in temperature?

Well, you'll notice a difference mainly in CPU-intensive tasks, such as encoding, photoshopping, video-editing, coding, etc. mainly because of the newer instructions SSE4.1 and the higher frequency.

The 45nm technology will also reduce power consumption a bit, and T8x00 chips generally undervolt better than most Merom CPUs, so it should run cooler when at full load - hence lower load temps and less fan noise.

 

You will get better battery life, run cooler, and get a boost in speed. Good upgrade.

 

Is it true that clock for clock a 2.0GHz penryn is better than a 2.0Ghz merom?

 

Depends upon what you run. For multimedia stuff and games, performance is gonna be similar if the frequency, cache (not possible), FSB is the same for both CPUs. For encoding and stuff, the Penryn will be faster mainly due to the advanced instructions.

 

What about that same comparison (power consumption, battery life, load temp) with a t9300? What's your experience?

 

Well, you'll save a bit on battery life with a stock T9300 when compared to a Merom CPU. Penryns are said to undervolt better than most Merom CPUs, though the voltage tolerance varies from one CPU to another.

By undervolting a Penryn well, you could save alot on power consumption, reduce load temps greatly, and improve battery life.
Checkout the Undervolting Guide, you'll see Penryn users who have undervolted even the highest multiplier to 0.95V and are stable.

 

The T8300 has a higher FSB at 800MHz. How about games that are very intense on the CPU for frames, what will I hopefully see?

 

An increase in frames per second.

Depending upon the game, if it was hammering the T5750's both cores to 100%, you'll see a good 10-15 frames per second increase.

 

This game was the equivalent of running orthos. Both cores maxed. I'm getting anxious for this Penryn to finally arrive!

I did the upgrade myself - no regrets.
Be sure to reapply thermal compound when you do the upgrade, and have a backup or two just in case things go butts-up.

 

Oh no its not the upgrading I'm worried about. After upgrading an Aspire 3680 you've seen it all. lol. I just wanted to understand the performance increases!
