Hey everyone, im new here.
I have a HP dv5-1235dx with a T6400 C2D @ 2.0 ghz/2mb cache/800fsb. Im looking to speed it up a bit and can get a good deal on a used T8300 @ 2.4ghz/3mb/800.
I know its not a big step up but are your opinions? I would rather get more RAM but a 4gb DDR2 chip is expensive, i cant find one for under $250. I currently run 4gb (2x2gb). I would like 6gb ideally.
So unless someone knows a good place for cheap, quality RAM i was wondering if anyone knows about the T8300 or opinions on using a used processor.
Thanks,
Tom

your HP uses the new Centrino 2 chips and a T8300 will not work with your computer.
look for any P8/9xxx series chips or
T9400/T9600/T9800's
as for RAM having 6GB isn't going to help you unless your doing some pretty intensive HD video rendering... and even then a processor upgrade will give you way more preformance.
4GB DDR2 ram modules are very expensive. now just imagine DDR3... -
t8300 WILL work since they are backward compatible, but it just makes no sense since it uses the same 800FSB. It would be wiser to follow Yuio advice and go for something like P8600/T9600
Also, I don't think your system will take more than 4Gb of RAM -
Your system can run the t8300 just fine. I would buy if for a deal then sell it and buy a t9x00 CPU. Also your system can officaly support up to 8gb's of ram.

have a great day everyone! -
Thanks for the replies guys.
So what im seeing is that if i stick with a 800mhz fsb im not really going to see a big performance gain, so find something in the 1066mhz range?
Af far as RAM, yes i can get to 8gb, but is it costly, thanks again. -
800Mhz or 1066Mhz FSB won't matter, you won't tell a difference between the two as FSB doesn't give any performance gain. Only the raw processor speed and cache size does matter when it comes to a core2duo-system as the memory controller is not integrated onto the CPU as AMD has.

Right now im sure the RAM i have is fine and the CPU is probably adequate. Im looking to get into some editting so thats why i may want a faster CPU.
My main question is what CPU can i install w/o having to do an update?
Also, from what i found on my own it looks like im looking for soemthing with a P socket to fit correctly?
Thank again! -
Bump. Sorry, but thread fall quickly here so i dont want mine forgotten....

what do you mean by "update" ?
look at here for compatible processors

Thanks for the help!
What i mean by update is that i want to just drop a new chip and not have to do anything else, if thats possible, or get a chip that requires all little extra work as possible. I know nothing about BIOS or any of that kind of stuff. The biggest upgrade ive performed on PC/laptop to date is installing RAM, haha. So thats the extent of my computer building/modding skills.
