So i got the P-172x fx a few months ago with the T8300 2.4ghz processor. I have been looking at getting an upgrade and wanted to know if the T9600 is compatible with my motherboard. I have read a few reviews of other people with FX laptops saying that the T9600 doesnt work because it cant dial down the 1066fsb to 800 on their machines. Other people with higher end FX models say it works fine. Any info? I was also looking at the the X7900 but am leaning towards the T9600 because of the larger Cache. Will I notice a difference between the two that is worth the $100 price difference?
Thanks
Kyle

well first off there is no "higher end" FX model. They are the exact same computer with just a different CPU (and in some cases screen)
And no the t9600 wont work with the 172.
The newer chipset is apprearently compatible with the older CPU's
(7811's can use the x9000 for example)
But the older chipset isnt compatible with the newer CPU's
(the 68xx/17x models cant use the x9100)
Your top end CPU's for the 172 will be:
t9300
x7800
x9000
the x7900 is available as well...

Lean towards the X7900/X7800/X9000, because the T9600 is incompatible with your system.

The T9600 is a monteveins chip. The Intel T9300, T9500, X9000 will work with your system.
The X7800 is a great bang for the buck extreme processor, but if you can find an X9000 for a decent price that would be ideal.
Why do you need a faster processor?

Perfect, thanks for all the info. K-Tron, I dont need a new processor. I don't need half the stuff I spend my money on lol but I do it because im young, stupid and disposable income.

I can has CPU?
If you do decide to get the upgrade, and if you've voided your warranty by doing so, I might just pluck the T8300 off you if the price is right.
(I'd PM him, but he don't have enough posts yet!)
