Hey, looking at getting a new laptop and I want to go smaller and lighter than my current (older) MBP 15". Pretty much have it down to the Vaio Y, HP dm4, and MBP 13".

I honestly don't know a ton about hardware specs, but am slowly learning. I'm trying to figure out what would be the difference between the i5-430UM that the Vaio Y is available with and the i5-430M that is available on the dm4. It seems like it'd be a big difference (1.2 GHz vs 2.26 GHz), but I'm not sure.

Can anyone of you help give me an idea of what sort of difference in performance there would be between the two processors? If it's any help, I'll be using the computer primarily for web browsing, streaming videos, listening to music, MS Office apps, and the occasional Photoshop...no gaming, intense image/video processing, etc.

I have a 2.2 GHZ Core 2 Duo processor in my current MBP. I imagine the 430M would exceed my processor's performance, but how would the 430UM compare to my current processor?

Thanks a ton for the help. And I apologize if this has been covered before. I searched around but couldn't find much.

The i5-430UM is slow. It is an ultra low voltage processor, it is not tuned to be fast as much as it is to excel in battery life. Ram with the 430UM runs at 800MHz vs 1066MHz on the 430M, and Turbo Boost on the 430UM only reaches 1.73GHz. But for your uses it will be fine. I have an Acer 3810T with a 1.4GHz SU9400 and am awaiting delivery of an Acer 1830T with the i5-430UM. On my 3810T I use Lightroom 3, Paint Shop Pro X2, watch HD video on Vimeo and Youtube, plus all the stuff you do with no problems.

The 430M definitely beats the C2D, the 430UM not so much but is still fine for your needs.
