It was all a big test market. Now that the numbers are in, Intel feels more confident to extend the warranty.

they actually knew that from the start. they just had to get some reallife numbers to make their lawyers trust their theoretical numbers, and support such a warranty change.
the ones developing the ssds @ intel would give you a 10 year guarantee easily. they themselves talk about 80 years lifetime since the 80gb gen1 ssd. -

The five year warranty may reinforce my initial choice of the 510 over the OCZ. When it comes to storage, reliability is paramount.
