I'm going to purchase a laptop computer for my daughter and have narrowed it down to three models.

One has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor TK-55, one has an Intel Core Duo processor, and the third ($100 more) contains a Intel Dual Core T2310 processor.

Which is the better processor? Which is the worst processor of the group?

    TripleB

I basically just want to know which is the preferred processor but if you would like to know all the specs I have on each, here's all I know:

    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor TK-55
    Toshiba A215-S7413 laptop
    1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive

    Intel Core Duo processor
    Sony VAIO VGN NR110 laptop
1GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive

    Intel Dual Core T2310 processor
Sony VAIO VGN-NR123E/S laptop $100 extra
    1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive

*I'd prefer (actually my wife would prefer) to stick with one of the cheaper models.

Well Sony will probably be better quality, and the CPU doesn't matter nearly as much as the other components in the notebook. What will your daughter be using it the notebook for?...

Those are some pretty old cpus, the amd isn't even a turion. The athlon is about 400 mhz faster then the pentium dual core but I believe the pentium will do better on power.

I think you can get a better, updated computer for the money though. Sony is notorious for being overpriced for what you get.

Tell us your price range so we can get a better idea.

Basically she will be using it for creating multi-media projects (powerpoint, etc), word processing, completing research for school, and surfing the web for research (and playing on Webkinz).

    Thanks for your input.

From what I've found the second one also has a T2310, so your just paying for the bigger HDD. I think the AMD wins, but maybe not.

For those tasks any of those CPUs should be fine. I'm not entirely sure what Webkinz is so I can't really tell you about GPU requirements.

You may want to take into account the build quality of the laptops as well. Good luck!

Actually the Dell Vostro 1000 is $400 with the current deal right now. About the same specs and you don't have to fight the crowds!

    EDIT: NM they're sold out.

Honestly you're not going to notice a difference between those CPUs. I'd pick the laptop you like best at that price point and go with it. Make sure you check our Tech Deals forum for the best deals.

Ah under 400 bucks? I agree with Chaz then, just pick one. Your getting a good price either way.

Not sure which one's better but I with the AMD!!!

I got up at 1:36 this morning and headed out to take a look at what lines had formed at three places: Best Buy had probably 350 to 400 people already in line, Circuit City had probably 80 to 100 people already in line, Office Depot...I was the third person in line. Luckily Office Depot was the place that had the laptop I decided I wanted.

I decided to go with the Toshiba A215-7428 for $499.99 (after rebates): http://dialtone.vstore.ca/product_in...f81f1128b1f4dc.

I went with it over the Sony and other Toshiba I was looking at for a couple reasons: it gave me (or should I say my daughter) 160GB instead of 120GB, it was a Toshiba which several IT guys told me would be better than the Sony, HP, and/or Compaq I was considering, and it offered 2GB of memory compared to 1GB which the others offered (I was told, probably here, that when running Vista 2GB would work much better than 1GB).

Thanks for everyone's input here....it was a tremendous help.

Congratulations on the purchase, you're brave for going out on Black Friday. Sounds like you made out pretty well with Office Depot. I know the laptop you're talking about, I was at OD the other day looking at it. Great price! $499.99 AR is unbeatable.

    Hi guys,

I just got my first notebook, a Pavilion DV6670CA from HP Canada last week, and overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. Here's the one I got:

    http://shopping.hp.ca/cStoreCA/Base...Id=25&FamilyId=111&BaseId=3866&BEId=5&Lang=EN

Like I said, I'm a first time laptop owner, and though the laptop feels quite sturdy, I have read in a lot of places that recently, the processing quality of AMD processors has not been so good. It has AMD Turion TL64 2.2 Ghz..with a huge HDD of 250GB. What are your experiences with the build quality of HP Pavilion laptops? How is their customer service in general? I have a one year warranty on this.

Secondly, how good do you think this laptop will be for gaming? It has nVIDIA GeForce 7150M with upto 559MB shared video memory. To be sure, it is not a high end graphics card, but I'll still like to game on it a little if possible. I installed the Far Cry demo the other day and it ran flawlessly on medium settings.....

I currently have 2 GB of RAM- It's not upgradable to 4GB.. Does upgrading to 4GB make a big difference in gaming terms?

And lastly, is the processor (AMD Turion TL64, 2.2GHz) enough to last me for the next 2-3 years? I will be mostly running professional design programs and office software on it, with maybe some web designing and video editing.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

HP has decent customer service as far as i know. Pavilions have very good build quality. I've been using my dv8000t for over a year now and no problems with hardware at all.

the 7150m is an integrated graphics chip, meaning it will not play the newest games at reasonable settings. For older games like warcraft 3/halo/wow, it will be just fine.

2gb ram is enough for most users. upgrading to 4gb will not impact gaming at all, especially since you are very limited by your integrated graphics chip.

the tl-64 is one of the best available amd processors for notebooks, and is fast enough to compete with some middle-range core 2 duos.

    hope this helped

    Thanx for the reply....

When I bought this laptop.. there was another one that i was considering... It is DX6665ca .. which had Intel Core2Duo at 2.0Ghz with 2GB RAM 240 dual HDD, Intel X3100 Graphics card.. upto 384MB available video memory..
My concern is that would that machine had been a better choice than this one.. since i'm getting both of these at the same price..!!

    any suggestions??
