On the ark.intel.com site, the i7-640qm is reported as supporting up to only 8GB of RAM.
But various computer makers and resellers offer to install as much as 16GB or more.
If the CPU only supports 8GB, how is extra RAM beyond 8GB useful?
Note that I did ask this in an Asus thread, but maybe it was the wrong place...
Thanks!

first , the CPU is 740qm. Secondly , intel processors have always been able to use more RAM than spec... the 740qm can use 16GB easily , 24GB or even 32GB if you got a lot of money... and all the RAM is useful and none is wasted... and plz stop cross posting.

So Intel is just very conservative with amount of RAM supported? Are they protecting themselves?
I belive that new systems can support more than 8GB, but why does Intel diminish their products' perceived abilities by being so conservative? Any idea? -
Intel says 8GB, resellers 16GB and up...
