Hey all. So I am going to buy a new notebook. I have two options. I have always been an Intel guy, but this time around I kind of like the AMD. The money difference between the two is minimal. I've read info on pros and cons vs the two and still need help. So again, don't mind the money difference. I care about performance differences. I don't plan to play any games, but I do plan to watch blu-ray movies.

    1) Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 + 512MB NVIDIA GeForce G 105M + 7200RPM HD

    2) AMD Turion Neo X2 Dual-Core L625 + 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4330 + 5400 RPM HD

So, those are my two choices. Please consider both the processor as well as the GPU, again the price difference is minimal on both, I know most people prefer Intel which I do too, but I am strictly going for the best performance. I guess battery life can be figured in, but it's not that big of a deal. Thank you so much!

Edited - Also with the Intel, I have the option of a 7200RPM HD that comes standard. I do not have that option with the AMD processor.

If I were you I go for the AMD System for performance.
If you check out passmark the difference between the processor in terms of performance is around the same.
The SU 9400 is 10 percent better in ratings then L625
Hence SU7300 should be almost equivalent
However in term of graphics the Intel System only has 8 shaders while ATi has 80/5 (Always divide ATi shader by 5 to get the Nvidia Equivalent number) = 16 shaders.
ATi 4330 is almost like 9400M G in terms of performance.

May I ask what laptop this is?

Sounds to me like the HP DM3. If so, go for AMD, hands down, you get switchable graphics between the 3200HD and the 4330HD. Definitively better than the Intel solution, and cheaper.

And the Turion Neo x2 is a very good CPU!

Yes, it is the HP DM3. I'm just concerned about going AMD this time because in the past Intel has always been a step ahead of AMD if not multiple steps ahead.

I've been contemplating which build to do with the DM3 all morning and decided go go with the su7300/g105m build. The 4330 from what i see is a faster card than the 105m but i think with culv processors it won't make a huge difference. I used the neo mv-40 on the hp DV2 which seems to just be the single core version of those neo x2's, and from what i see it was a decent bit slower than the new intel culv's. As well as the intel build will get close to double batter life.

It is over 100 bucks less, plus switchable, and AFAIK AMD has done their homework and their CPUs are not what they used to be.

If I had the extra bucks, believe me, I would be all over the DM3 with AMD Turion Neo X2

I calculated the difference, and it's $70. And if there are any other deals like the 25% today, the difference could be less. So the money I figure is close enough to where i'm not worried about it.

Also what is the difference in battery life between the intel and AMD processors? I know the TDP on the new intel is 10 (or they claim it to be 10) and the AMD was a tad higher.

the amd is an 18watt cpu and the intel is 10 watt, the amd claims it will get 6 hours. Though i remember on my dm2 they claimed 4 hours with the mv40 and i was lucky to get 2.5 on a 6 cell. Though it seems their using different battery types and different chipsets, So i hope/guess the battery situation has changed.

Yeah, though it's not that big of a deal to me, based on what I am reading, the battery life may be a big difference between the two.

Remember the AMD gets you with switchable graphics if that has any influence...

If not, the Intel is a good solution (though the AMD will run faster)

Well it's probably not a big deal, but my plan is to use the GPU when I'm watching blu-rays or playing some games, then just going integrated the remaining time. That's if I go with the AMD.

Are you sure about this? It doesn't say anything about switchable graphics on the DM3 page.

Also I calculated the exact price difference, and it'll only be $52.50 between the AMD and the Intel. Once I get this decision made, I will order ASAP.

It was posted when the DM3 was out.
Perhaps not any more? No idea.

I think I made my decision. Thanks everybody. I'm probably going with the Intel. One thing really stuck out that I just NOW noticed. The Intel comes with DDR3 memory. The AMD comes with DDR2.

I always thought DDR3 ran cooler and performed faster (but also had higher latency) than DDR2?

It will do all of that once DDR3 matures. For now it is not much better than DDR2, except in using less power.

If it uses the GS 45 chipset DDR3 is locked to 800MHZ FSB, the same as DDR2.

The way I look at it.

Get either the DM3Z with the 4330 for graphics power or the DM3T with the Intel 4500 for the longer battery life. The other models arent worth contemplating.

i'm not sure if alot of you people are correct on the amd system performing better than the intel. I looked at the performance result benchmarks I found today with a dv2 using that same amd chip, and compared it to a su7300 system in benchmarks and the intel system got better scores from what I saw.
Also (correct me if i'm wrong) I thought the neo already almost bottlenecked the hd3410 in the dv2 with which is like half as good as the 4330, which makes me think the extra power might not be used as well as the intel nvidia build.

I'm not trying to say anyone is completley wrong these are just from my long research before buying today as well as experience with similar systems. It will be interesting to see, I will be sure to post benchmarks of my intel system online, if the amd ati performed alot better, I could probly deal with that.

and fyi, stats aside the nvidia card gets around a couple hundred less in 3dmark06 and 05 than the ati one, so I think really gaming wise it will be alot up to the cpu to make the difference. Ok I'm done now :) hope this was imformative

most of those benchmarks are for the single core Neo. We all know the Intel CPUs will perform better, but AMD clearly has better GPUs which should offer better gaming performance

The dm3 should handily outperform the dv2 across the board. Dual core 1.5 gen processor and next gen gpu.

the one i am talking about i saw was the L625 processor. Though as for the test's i think it was for pcmark05 i believe though tbh i am not exactly sure what all of what that tests.

But not sure, i will be interested to see how benchmarks turn out.

Well, that was the first generation of Neos. IIRC these are newer and more efficient, and dual-cored (some models)

no these are the same exact ones that the later generation of the dv2 had the option to put in. you can search for dv2 with l625 and get some benchmarks.

That may be, but you are still negating the benefit of the 4330 upgrade. AMD has done a good job of offloading duties to the GPU in tasks like video rendering etc, and the efficiency of the 4000 series is definitely a big step ahead of the 3000 series.

I just cannot wait to see the 5000 series implemented in Mobility.

Are either of the processors in these AMD/Intel socketed? Or are they Ball Grid Array?
