Intel is set to release, this year, both Penryn mobile processors that break 3Ghz as part of the Montevina Plus rollout and ULV processors at prices that we can afford. I'm sort of hoping they're close to same thing so I can get high performance and battery life out of one lightweight machine.

What's the Montevina Plus compatibility look like? Can a Montevina platform use the new Penryns?

I would think so since Montevina was built to work with the Penryn architecture, and I can't imagine any chip designed for a notebook would be built to draw so much power that it is no longer compatible with the slightly older models. My biggest concern is what this incremental upgrade to the existing line means for the coming of Calpella. I can't wait for the FSB to get out of my laptop once and for all.

MSI's new 13" X460 is an example of this platform. Acer and Lenovo are working on models for this category too

New high-end processors... big whoop. How about they give me a ULV C2D with a PGA package? Or maybe something with unlocked VIDs? Please...?

Montevina Plus or whatever they call it is more of a "refresh" platform. It introduces new chipsets and CPUs. It's a supplement of current Montevina line, not a replacement. More mobile CPUs and a new chipset(the GM47) will be out.

Yep I just came in to post that it'll be GM47, launching with the 3.06Ghz T9900.

I'm still not 100% sure if that rules out the CPU's compatibility with the current PM45.

The T9900 and X9300 have the same specs as the T9800 and the X9100 (except the clocks). So, it'll be compatible.

I'm too lazy to search on Intel, but one should be able to find the Q2/3 09 CPU release chart.

And GM47 just has a better integrated GPU. So, the new Penryns will work with the PM45 (with BIOS Support of course).
