I plan to put one of these drives on my Christmas wishlist and was wondering which one was a better buy
They are almost identical in price.
    Vertex 2:
    Sq. read: 285mb/s
    Sq. write: 275mb/s

    Intel:
    Sq. read: 250mb/s
    Sq. write: 100mb/s

From what I gather, the vertex 2 is more likely drop performance fast with use, and intel has better io system?

The machine I plan to run this drive is an Asus G53JW.
Reading the G73 users discussion, it appears that there is a hardware limit on how fast a hd could be accessed. (so I may not be able to get the full advantage of the max write speed)

Can people please commenton which is the better drive and why?

If you do alot of handling of big files, go for the vertex. If its your first SSD and you just want to see what its like go for the Intel.

If you are sure that Sandforce drive doesn't have problem with your model and you don't use it heavily for video(or other non-compressable contents), go for it.

x25m is the most stable and a steady performer.

I bought a Sandforce and returned it after seeing all those reported issues(and the drive died) and ends up with x25m.

Do you want the fastest boots and application loading? Get the Intel.
Do you want the fastest heavy multi tasking and compressable writes? Get the Vertex 2.

But these differences are small and most likely you won't notice them during usage. So it would make sense to decide on other grounds.

I'd say Intel is the more reliable one.

Id go intel, Sandforce has bigger benchmark numbers to throw around but that doesnt mean better real life performance.

I do know there are a few quirks with sandforce that I personally woulnt want to be worried about so I would gladly take a small hit in performance to ease of use and reliability.

Ah... Actually, I bought a panasonic gh1 to make movies on my freetime, but I wont be saving them on my SSD because I dont wanna make unneeded write to it. Will most likely edit it on the second harddrive
