I can't decide between a Dell latitude D830 and D820. The problems is is the Intel X3100 graphics good enough for a college student majoring in chemical engineering. and to play games

What kind of games will you be playing? The X3100 will be powerful enough to handle any games that were made before 2005, like any of the Steam games.

If you want to play FEAR or Company of Heroes or Oblivion, I suggest a more powerful card.

Most engineering software does not need a powerful graphics card. The one exception I can think of is 3D rendering and animations.

Pretty much no matter what, if you want to game you need to avoid the X3100. Get a dedicated card.
