According to that link my CPU has 2 cores and 4 threads but my gadget shows 4 cores >>> Untitled.png

    So which is correct?

Two cores with hyperthreading. Some apps see the virtual cores as full cores.

Seconded. You can also go into the bios and turn hyper threading off and see what the gadget shows then.

That option may not be available depending on the laptop. Anyways, a quick and easy way to tell is to open the task manager and check under the performance tab. It will say that your CPU has 2 physical cores and 4 logical cores meaning it is a dual core. It's the physical core count that you want to look at.

Yes, I noticed that after posting, I booted my windows 8 drive this morning at work. There is a way to check in Windows 7 as well, I remember that much, but I guess I'll have to look for it again.

The fact that you use a gadget should have been a giveaway that you were on Windows 7, but somehow, I didn't make the connection at the time of my initial post. At worse CPU-Z will tell you everything you wanted to know about your CPU and more.
