    Hiya folks.

Here's a new one. Have a pavilion DV6000 laptop with a 15.4" WXGA screen with a very unattractive gray bar filling the bottom 1/4 of the screen. I know it's not a software issue because it is always there - during the POST and on into Windows.

First inclination is to reseat the video cable on the mainboard and on the screen - which I did. Still no go. Next inclination is that the screen is bad. So thankfully I happen to have two spare 15.4" laptop monitors lying around that I know work fine, so I installed 'em. The first one oddly shows two displays (like a cloned image of the display on the same screen), and a bunch of colored-fuzzy garbled mess at the bottom. The second one shows ALL gray, no picture, no nothin'. Aren't these laptop screens universal? Is it possible that the video pins on the laptop video connector are different, causing the different images on the two screens?

If that's the case, I guess I should get the model # of the original screen and order one of those?

if you are talking about something like the following image, then it is normal in most notebooks. It is called backlight bleeding. Some screens worse than others.

Thanks for the fast reply. No, it doesn't look like that on the original screen. It is a solid grey line - you cannot see the cursor if you move it behind the grey line. Basicaly just want to know if all laptops with 15.4" screens have universal connectors (in other words you can take one screen out and put it in another laptop and it will work fine) or if I need to purchase a screen replacement that matches the exact model # of the original screen to get my laptop working again.

You will need an exact model. Someone who knows your laptop model better might know of a few difference screens that will work, but there will be a very small number total, often just one or two.

No, the screens are NOT universal. It has to be of the exact same model/that comes with the specific notebook model or you will probably end up getting the notebook or screen hurt.

Thanks guys. I'm ordering a compatible replacement screen for my laptop. Hopefully it IS a screen issue and not a video cable issue. Twisting/turning the screen gently while powered does not alter the gray bar in any way, it always stays the same, so I'm pretty sure its just a bad screen.

"That" screen? Which laptop/screen are you talking about?
Does "that" screen come with that laptop original?

So you're saying you can use any screen for any notebook? So if i get another 15.4" screen that is 1680x1050 for my vaio that's 15.4" and 1280x800, it would both fit AND work? Are you sure the connectors are universal?

Can anyone confirm that any screen works with any laptop? I wanted to get a 17" barebone laptop, but the WUXGA ones are very pricey. I was thinking of getting this and replacing the screen with something like this. Will that work?
