I ordered Dell Latitude today (buy lots of Dell stuff) and also Samsung SSD on the side. It cost $50 more than the exact same one on Amazon etc. Same packaging, same kit, same version, etc. Dell medium business guy could not lower the price. So I bought it anyway because of the convenience of adding to existing order, shipping, etc.
Interesting part: He explained that Dell only certifies some mfgs for components, and Samsung is one. Easy to believe. And all component which they sell, which come from a cert vendor, are also tested in batch. If a batch of SSDs does not meet their test spec, they do not accept it. So, according to him, the Samsung I will get from them is from a batch which has been tested (spot tested I assume) and is a top quality copy. Whereas Amazon and others will get the ones which did not pass builder tests, and is therefor sold at a lower price. He said he was just recently trained on the subject. This does not sound too ridiculous, but could easily be smoke up my too. After all, they have to replace it in person within 24 hours if it fries in the next 36 months so I know they would want reliable batches. But can anyone confirm if this is real? If so, it would make the little extra price worth it for many folks. If not, it's a good pitch.

i fail to see how you can check an SSD for quality except for DOA conditions.
EDIT: anyhow, SSDs are exceptionally reliable. I, for one, would not pay $50 for convenience. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
He fed you a good line - you almost seem to believe it.
Don't. -
Do you have the rep's name?
Dell will be glad to endure you with some good loot to make up for the lie and kick the rep out of the company or just move him somewhere where he won't be recognized so he can continue his games.... -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
The 50 dollars you pay for is to get Dell (the "OEM") to service it for you under warranty. A retail SSD requires you to RMA to the manufacturer, whereas Dell will send a technician with an SSD next business day. That is what you pay 50 dollars more for, for a huge OEM to take care of you.

He bought the retail version of the SSD from Dell. He didn't buy a SSD upgrade for the system otherwise he wouldn't be talking $50 but maybe $150~ difference in price lol. This SSD won't be covered under the laptop warranty of NBD.
@OP
He got you hook, line, and sinker. You got lied to, flat out.
Interesting story a Dell rep told me, is this true?
