Now that the price has come down substantially I'd like to install one for convenience. How much trouble would it be ie cables, screws; and would it work without altering the look of my laptop?

It should just be an easy swap and than getting the proper software/drivers to make it work porperly. I don't know how easy it is to get to the drive to swap out as some can be difficult and others take two minutes and your done.

I would do a search on youtube to see how other people have done it.

Am I assuming it will go into your HDX18? You should just be able to buy a generic one and swap the faceplates. Careful though, if you break the tabs, it's a new faceplate.

Unless your notebook use a slot-loaded drive, it usually is a very simple upgrade. As homank76 suggested, you could look for video demonstrations or the service manual (if available) for detailed instructions. In most notebooks, you only have to remove the bottom cover, the optical drive is held by a single screw.

No cables to worry about in notebooks, it is a single connector. As for altering the looks, don't worry: you simply have to remove the faceplate from the old drive and put it on the new one.

Thanks all; and I have checked the youtube tutorials, and the procedure seems simple enough. Just wanted some corroboration since people sometimes tend to exaggerate when they use the term simple.

I can change the oil and the filters but thats about it for my under the hood work. :)

EDIT: Would I need to order any additional cables/connector etc? Or is it a direct swap?

    No, it's a direct swap.

Yes as long as you have the right one (should be the smaller SATA connector for most laptop optical drives) and blu ray software, you should be good to go.
