I have a Gateway ML6227b notebook which doesn't have bluetooth (despite having a shortcuy key to switch it on/off). How would I set about installing an internal bluetooth module?

    thanks in advance

Open up the case first and make sure that there is a place to plug in the adapter and the antenna wire is present first (since you plan on opening the case anyway this shouldn't be a big deal). It would suck to go to all of the trouble in finding and purchasing the hardware only to find out that you actually cannot install it.

Next I would locate the part. This ( link) may be the part that you are looking for, but I would call gateway and confirm that it is what you need for your laptop.

The rest is easy. You should be able to simply install the bluetooth module, download the drivers and have bluetooth running on your laptop. I did this for a Toshiba Tecra M4 laptop and it was pretty straightforward.

I am in a similar situation. Planning to buy a Gateway laptop (P-7805u FX edition) from Best Buy that has built-in 802.11 but not bluetooth. The user manual mentions that Bluetooth is an option and also I infer from the manual that you can have both.

I must have Bluetooth function because that appears to be the only option for syncing my Palm Treo (or any Palm device) on a 64-bit Vista system.

I hate to use a scarce card slot for something like this. And root level USB-2 ports are also precious. I have learned by experience that a hubbed USB-2 port is not not functional with some devices (my Sony DVD burner included).

If an internal Bluetooth module is unobtainable, my next option may be to use a USB Bluetooth adapter, Rocketfish micro is very compact - less likely to break off in use - and costs $42 at Best Buy. Haven't confirmed that it will work with 64-bit Vista, though.

Since I must have the Bluetooth for the Palm, I also thought of getting a Bluetooth external keyboard and mouse when I upgrade to an external monitor at home. That way I would not have to use any hardwired ports for those functions.

Would be interested in how you make out with getting a Gateway Bluetooth internal module.

    Mike

I have the Gateway M-2626u laptop I got from HSN Dec 08. The warranty expires next month. At that time I want to make some upgrades. My laptop did not ship with bluetooth, but the manual makes mention that this model may have it and explains how to turn it on and off. There's even a labled keyboard shortcut for it. I haven't open up the laptop yet, but can someone tell me if the following eBay item is what I need to add bluetooth?

    Thanx in advance

is it possible to change the bluetooth module? or it won't work if you don't use the module that the manufacturer wants?
this can be important since the lack of drivers and some application support varies a lot.
