I just installed a new DVD drive in my laptop but it's not showing up. There's no drive letter in 'My computer' and it's not in the device manager.
The BIOS recognizes it. It's mentioned as secondary slave.
Any ideas?

Is it there in disk management? Start Run and enter diskmgmt.msc
-
No it's not there.
I tried 'Rescan disks', no effect. -
Is it in Device Manager?
-
No it's not in device manager.
I just tried reinstalling the IDE controller, no effect. -

It`s not a pioneer as my Toshiba has a firmware upgrade to fix the following problem "These FW Update solves the error, that the ODD can not be recognized on SATA AHCI mode"

The DVD drive does not boot from any CD. I'm starting to think it's dead or there's something wrong inside the laptop.
My previous DVD drive did not work either. -

Try setting it to Primary Slave.

It's a hardware issue. Changing it to primary wouldn't make a difference if he has the correct boot sequence.
