    Maximum in what?

Number of drives, GB capacity or physical size?

The only thing I can guess @ 99% certainty is that it will only take 2.5" HDD/SSD's in the main drive bay(s) and up to a 12.5mm Z height drive in the ODD location if you can spare the optical drive.

So, up to 3 HDD's (with no optical) - but it depends on your specific (what exact model/year is it?) system.

If you are talking about size, it is 750GB. You can also get a caddy for the optical drive turning it into a 2nd drive caddy.

tiller he already stated his model (L502X) aka Dell XPS 15 R2

i got 640 GB right now in my L502X But i am running out of space. & I don't like keeping external hard disk. So i was kinda thinking to remove my internal 640GB hard drive and put something like 1-2 TB is it possible ?

Actually I use DVD/CD-RW drive so i can't think about removing it.

No all current 1 TB drives are 12.5mm and will not fit in most laptops. I think the 1.5-2 TB drives are even thicker..

No such drives even exist for 2.5" bays. Those are all (desktop) 3.5" drives.

Okay, so maximum capacity in a single drive is the question.

The most you can get right now is the Scorpio Black 750GB 2.5" models (recommended) or the Seagate's version at the same size (which I do not recommend - slower and less reliable than the WD's SB series).

I really think that for just over 100GB increase in capacity, this should tide you over (for a while) until the 1TB 2.5" 9.5mm drives become available.

However, I don't know if the cost/time is worth it though? It might be for you however.

If you need the capacity though - the WD SB 750GB is the only drive I'd be considering right now.

    Good luck.

There are 2.5" 1.5 TB drives. One site cracked one open and it was thicker than 12.5mm form factor.

Can't believe Laptop can not have a more then 750GB Hard drive? That's Like We're in back to 16th Century. Still Our technology has to achieve many things. My desktop is much better then a laptop. What a shame. i'm really disappointed. i thought we could have at least 1TB Internal HDD.

    @ tilleroftheearth

Yeah it's not worth it. Changing HDD for only like 100GB which is not a good idea.

You can add a HDD to complement your existing storage with this:

    See:
2nd HDD or SSD Caddy for DELL XPS 15 (L501x, L502x) [OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

I realize that you need/want your optical, but if the removal is easy/straightforward - then this might be a good option to use until notebooks come out of the 16th Century. :)

If you really, really need so much storage on your notebook - I suggest looking for two bay drive models and sell your current system. (Actually, I would be looking for a 3 bay model with an mSATA port for 4 drives total).

    Good luck.

Desktop hard drive technology exploded, laptops did but not in such a big way. Remember just 3 years ago average hard drive size was like 120-160 GB, and the largest was like 320 GB that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Some caddy support hot swap so you can remove the drive and put back in your optical drive and back/forth
