Just out of interest (yes I have Googled it) is there any way of taking an old CD-ROM drive and turning into an external one.
I assume it would need to be plugged into the mains n all, but I was wondering if it was possible.

Yes, most can be connected and operated externally though a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE cable, with out external AC power. Which drive is it - Desktop or Notebook ?

Oh, chars for the link +1, it would've taken me hours to find that ;)
Planning on just doing it myself, you know, for something to do lol,
I recon it would need a power adapter tho.

    Cheerio :) :D

EDIT: HAHA, just realise I have an old IDE to usb right behind my laptop screen, works, thanks anyway :)

I have the Vantec version of that adaptor and it works really well. I liked it so much I bought three of them, for different projects: (It can work with any 2.5" or 3.5" Sata or IDE optical drive or harddrive)

Newegg is a rip off for this part, so get it elsewhere.

    like from these two places:

Just compare shipping costs and find out which one comes out cheaper
