Hi, Thank you for reading my question!

Problem: My laptop (Dell 600m) screen went black suddenly. When I would restart or hibernate then turn it back on, the screen would stay lit for about ten seconds before going black again. I read a bunch of advice online that led me to believe my inverter was bad. I bought a new one from eBay and installed it carefully. My screen then worked for almost a day, then back to the same black-out problem.

A few more facts: When the screen did work with the new inverter, it flickered continually (not too bad) and the bottom right corner of the screen (near the Windows clock) spread blackness very slowly until it covered the clock and a tiny bit more, but did not spread farther than that. When the screen saver came on for a while, and then I returned to the computer to use it, the black spot was gone and started over again from the corner. Also, that corner of the screen was very hot to the touch, but no other part of the screen was. I need new hinges; the right one has been broken for a while, so I have had to keep the screen close to upright (and the right one broke while I was fixing--oops!). I just ordered a new pair.

I am an amateur (though a handy one) and don't have replacement parts, but when I go back home to visit, I know two people with a 600m in case I really had to test the parts, etc.

Question: I can exchange with the eBay seller for a new inverter, but based on the facts, does anyone have advice on what it might be? Did I get a bad replacement inverter? Is there something else wrong that will keep ruining any new inverters I install?

Thank you so much for your time!!! -Matt

This is probably indicative of a bad backlight. For reasons unknown to me, I've seen wiring near the backlight "burned" such that there is a lot or resistance (thus the high heat), or too much resistance (thus doesn't work at all), and that might be what's happening here.

While some people say that inverters go bad more often than backlights, I've found the opposite to be the case, but you can try to replace the inverter again and see if it solves the issue.... inverter replacements are cheap while backlight replacements are either time consuming or expensive (when you break the screen and end up buying a new one anyway :().
