    @Mr. Fox @Papusan @hmscott @Phoenix @unclewebb @-=$tR|k3r=- @ole!!! @iunlock @DeeX @sirleeofroy @Prema @johnksss @Ethrem @Rengsey R. H. Jr. @bloodhawk @Georgel
    @TBoneSan @woodzstack @GodlikeRU

    Abstract

    Ok, I've seen conflicting claims of 6820HK both being able to sustain 45w+ indefinitely and it's hard capped at 45w.

    @D2 Ultima 's mobile i7 info still states that the 6820HK on ASUS model is limited to 4GHz OC, so does some manufacturer limit the OC on HK chips?

    Objective

    The objective of this investigation is to figure out how the 6820HK would handle OC and adding power.]

    Testing equipment

    The laptop model in question is manufactured by ASUS and provided as a test unit by Micro Center!

    ROG G752VS-XB72K OC Edition

    Specs as follow (TO BE UPDATED WITH MORE DETAILS) (?)
    • Core i7 6820HK Unlocked BGA CPU
    • Intel chipset (?)
    • GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 FULL BGA model
    • 32GB RAM (2x16GB) - mounted on upper motherboard side
    • Toshiba XG3 OEM 256GB NVMe SSD
    • 850 EVO 500GB (my own) slave drive
    • 230W AC Adapter
    • Windows 10 Pro Anniversary x64 - CLEAN INSTALLED
    • 17.3" G-Sync panel (?)
    • Intel 8260 WIFI
    • (?)
    KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE IS NO BIOS OPTION TO OVERCLOCK!

    The system has already been modified, the bottom clear panel have been removed to allow the fans direct access to cold air. Previously it was blocked and the fans would have indirect, inefficient access to cold air.

    There will be no repaste/disassembly of this machine due to the amount of complicated steps needed to access the heatsink assembly.

    Thanks to UncleWebb, I can use Throttlestop to change the CPU frequency and whatnot, this will provide most access to the system's performance tuning, HWINFO64 will be used to monitor system.

    AC unit to blast the system with cold air (approx 17-18c) is available only from Monday to Friday when I am at work.

    How to unlock power limit for 6820HK on ASUS G752VS

    Before the unlock, the CPU would be limited to 45W for 8 seconds or so. Read below to unlock this power limit!

    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    • Do the same setting to the CPU CACHE
    • Back in the Throttlestop window, match the screenshot below and click "SAVE"

    [IMG]

    • Open Throttlestop every login
    Alternatively you can use this command, saved as a .bat file in your startup folder

    Copy this directory to the windows explorer navigation bar and press enter
    C:\Users\*your username*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    The command

    Code:
    @echo off
    @echo off
    cd "C:\Users\*your username*\Documents\Applications\ThrottleStop_810"
    @echo off
    start ThrottleStop.exe
    @echo off
    exit
    @echo off
    exit

    How to overclock?

    Here you can adjust CPU speed (per core usage) and CPU voltage (add or decrease)

    OCCT is far more punishing than AIDA64 in terms of stress

    This will be interesting.

    There are ways to unlock the BIOS and MOD the ME, to enable overclocking support (native and bclk for pre skylake) , but im not sure if you are down for that. I think TS should be more than enough though.

    Also about AIDA64, its a great stress testing tool , but dont take it as the end all be all, it doesn't push the processor that much and barely pushes the power load. Specially for Skylake you want to try H.264 encoding runs, they really bring out unstable over clocks. Maybe Prime95 and Cinebench to push the power load?

    For exmaple :
    [IMG]

    AIDA64 barely even pushed my processor beyond 65W @ 4.5Ghz. Prime95 and Cinebench push it way more.

    Looking forward to it.

    The Asus is indeed a circus to disassemble. However, without a repaste, we will all have to keep in mind that the results need to be taken with the understanding in mind that there is a major handicap to begin with. ie...before anyone goes on a barking rampage about bga, mobile chips etc...

    Hope the other alternative cooling methods will do some justice.

    My 6820HK (LM w/ GC) runs sub 70's under full load and while gaming in the mid to low 60's. GPU 57C on avg. @ 4.0GHz.

    Let the games begin!

    edit: outdated method!

    Discovered something new.

    To unlock the 45w power limit on the CPU:

    1. Install "ROG Gaming Center"
    2. In TURBOGEAR Utility click the double >> arrow
    3. "EXTREME" and hit Apply - DO NOT RUN ANY STRESS TEST YET
    4. Start your throttlestop
    5. DO NOT TOUCH TPL SETTINGS, but click FIVR window.
    6. Select overclock to x39 for all cores
    7. On both CPU Core and CPU Cache, unlock adjustable voltage
    8. Apply undervoltage (I recommend -125mv, YMMV)
    9. Hit apply
    10. Run TS Bench 1024 8-thread and see the unlocked power limit!

    NOTE THAT THIS IS A WORKAROUND METHOD UNTIL @johnksss SAVES THE DAY!

    Well for fun I took the turdbook for a spin. After seeing a lot of outrage of bashing on mobile chips to make themselves feel bigger in the e-peen (when it does the complete opposite) ever since the roll out of Pascal, this is just to demonstrate that it is possible to acquire a decent mobile chip like the 6820HK and that not all mobile chips are created equal. It's apparent that some are forgetting the fact that not all chips are created equal, whether it's mobile or desktop chips. *

    This is also to support the thread in the performance (stability) of the 6820HK and to prove that it can sustain stress for more than a few seconds beyond its 45W TDP. (Someone in another thread had mentioned that these chips can barely hold stable past 45W TDP only for a few seconds? Forgot who, but you know who you are :p)

    Okay so straight to the point. 6820HK is rated at 2.7GHz with a max Turbo of 3.6GHz as advertised. Well and of course the silicon lottery advertisement of 4.1GHz lol...we all know not all the scratch tickets is a winning ticket to hold 4.1GHz...but nevertheless...

    This is straight up, black and white, no BS (meaning no weak bench apps), put money where the mouth is type of bench test using a true benchmark app (OCCT) that doesn't mess around with CPU load. It's the real deal. (Thanks to @Mobius 1 for the recommendation.)

    6820HK OCCT Benchmark for 30+ Minutes:

    Test was done with all cores @ 3.6GHz, the 6820HK's stock max turbo boost. No OC on this run as I just wanted to obtain a base and also because for this chip the Max Boost is 3.6GHz. So be it. Fair enough?

    I ran it for 30+ minutes. Not 1 minute, not 5 minutes...30+ minutes. That's enough to know if the chip will kick the bucket or if it's too weak to sustain the stress.

    As you can see I've used HWiNFO64, ThrottleStop and obviously OCCT to monitor the bench.

    Results:

    One thing that I've found impressive was how well the temps held for the 30+ minutes at 100% CPU. The readings are a little off among the three apps, but take your pick for what it is...

    Max Temps:
    • 64, 58, 59, 57 [HWiNFO]
    • 65, 65, 58, 58 [TS]
    • 65, 57, 59, 56 [OCCT]
    Max TDP:

    • 74.760W

    The TDP hovered well above the 45W TDP of the chip for the entire duration of the test. (Myth of only 45W, debunked.)

    Not bad for a mobile chip.

    I hope those seeking info on the 6820HK can find this info useful.

    * Okay so the red asterisk. Just a reminder that there is no gain of any kind comparing a mobile chip to a desktop chip and by doing so only shows that one is not competent enough to understand that they are two different animals. It is no secret that Desktop chips are superior to mobile chips in overall performance. Duh. It's by design that mobile chips are to run efficient in a mobile platform. A desktop is not a laptop.

    [IMG]

    For future visitors researching the 6820HK (mobile chips in general) here's a tip though:

    With the roll out of Pascal, if you are wanting to game and want power, do not pay DTR prices for a MSI, ASUS etc... with a bga chip. (It is highly likely the same can be said for AW, although we don't know for certain what their offerings are yet. Pax West: Sept 2nd, we'll know for sure. I predict bga CPU and bga GPU at DTR pricing like MSI and ASUS did.) That's just stupid. Instead, opt for a DTR that can be obtained for the same price or cheaper depending on your set up. Now if you need a casual gaming laptop for fun, well just pick up whatever from the Dell outlet store with a coupon for >$1,000 and call it a day. Do not support companies that offer bga chips at DTR prices.

    Only ~2C difference for the most part....not too shabby.

    Oddities found with my G752VS 6820HK 3.9GHz run @ stock voltage (reset at throttlestop, -20mv), it throttles at the 20 minute mark back to 45w

    I suspect this is probably due to too much thermal spikes and the cpu reaching over 90c on testing with OCCT like iunlock mentioned above

    Can you dial it to 4.0ghz and 1.200v? Isn't there some vdroop at full load?

    So 4ghz at 45w is literally impossible and that 2.7ghz is what the 45w is based off of?

    Can you do a test where you dial the voltage to 1.35v or 1.34v and disable C1E and speedstep/BD prochot

    17R3 6820HK/980M

    I test with BD Prochot disabled, I will try with the C1E and Speedstep disabled

    Correct

    In other news, I just disassembled this thing and applied liquid metal on the CPU. Insanely good temps right now.

    The thermal paste they use is not very good, and the GPU VRM didn't get much contact from the stock thermal pad.

    I will post a tutorial of disassembly later.

    You watch out how much it can be pushed, else...

    It's still a very respectable machine, though newer stuff is always better in terms of perf/watt.

    It's nice for what it is and in its class IMO the best machine overall from build quality, design, keyboard, screen, lucky silicon lottery and warranty. It can't be beat. But that's just my opinion.

    Oh yes...very new stuff :) And a very big leap...it's a new ball game now in so many ways...

    Haha, epic GIF....ROFL...yea I'll be careful...

    We're always wanting the newest, biggest, baddest and shiniest...all the while being practical.

    With the retarded DTR prices we're seeing from bga offerings so far...there is no way one should ever pay that much for a bga unit. It's just crazy how the gaps of pricing have changed along with performance. It almost seems relative, but at the same time, there's no replacement for socketed goodness.

    Yea the 17R3 is a fine piece for its class. It's done well and I've been fortunate enough to have a few good silicons to play with. What I'll miss the most is the warranty. It is absolutely the best, which is so good that it almost offsets the worries of owning a bga. I don't condone bga in a true gaming laptop at all, no no no...I'm just saying with an over night warranty service, it's a big "something," that's hard to overlook.

    I miss delidding and all the socketed goodness for sure...

    Honestly the msi and asus isn't so bad, but the price is what drives me away. This isn't a full blown DTR, it's just a power-laptop!

    Man, I feel sorry for @Tanner@XoticPC @Kevin@GenTechPC @Donald@HIDevolution that offers a repaste service for this thing. Took me a good 1.5 hr to get to the motherboard. I feel for this laptop though, it's worth to buy the repaste service (ask for liquid metal on CPU/GPU) instead of dealing with disassembly headache.

    True. It's not a dtr, but now with Pascal and a decent 6820HK, the gap is no longer as wide as the older (wow, feels strange to even call it that now, but it actually is) 980 desktop vs 980M.

    IMO, what defines a DTR now is purely it being socketed both on the CPU and GPU, where as before there were more variables that distinctively separated it by a wide margin compared to the truly crippled soldered gpu's of the 9xxM series.

    Now with the recent dtr and bga gaming laptops sharing the same chip, this forces the bga gaming laptop companies to up their game in the heat sink and cooling area. It's inevitable. They must do it.

    I would be interested to hear what you all think of the gap margin today with Pascal vs the 9xxM area?

    It's too early to tell and who knows, some company that we're all familiar with and some that we're not familiar with may release something crazy like a true dtr machine with proper cooling? Wishful thinking, but not impossible. Only time will tell.

    Seeing the heat issues with the 1080SLI makes you wonder, let alone the screen fiasco of uncertainty. What a nightmare. Let the cancelling orders begin....actually it already has...

    Just nuts...

    What I know for sure is that I would prefer a socketed machine, but there are a lot of check marks on my list that the next gaming laptop will have to be able to fulfill.

    Repasting services?! I would love to provide that. Humbly quoting my close friend who sat right next to me while I LM'ed his 17R3 with GC + Thermal Padded, he did say, "Why aren't you providing this service for others?" (Knowing how OCD I am.) - I then laughed and said, "Well, I totally would, but I'd have to get some customers under my belt first to establish the credibility and trust." - With confidence, I know my OCD and experience with this stuff in general will provide a flawless repaste job, as I know anyone else with true OCD+experience can provide it as well. Not just me. I do have pretty much everything, my own dedicated work room / shop where I used to repair phones, tablets and every tool under the Sun.

    When I used to fix phones and tablets, it would make me cringe to see some of these people on youtube man handling the devices, while putting their nasty arse greasy fingers all on the chips and stuff...what the freakin' hay right? That makes me cringe. The way some people treat and handle electronics in general, especially internals. SMH.

    Anyhow, you've ( @Mobius 1) helped me spark an idea in servicing the poor saps with AW's especially. We all know the plastic cap classic. (Inside joke.)

    If I do choose to go the D2 route, I'll surely have fun dissecting that (which is cake compared to the bga madness of the AW's for example and the Asus you've experienced.)
