I am about to pull the trigger on a Thinkpad Edge E420 but they do not offer any upgrades on the screen resolution.

I want this model due to it having a numerical keypad. If the T420/520 offered one, I would be purchasing one of those models instead.

Is 1366X768 fine on a 14 inch display?

Laptop will be used for Accounting work and Music Editing software.

    Thanks

I don't believe the Edge E420 has a numpad. Only the Edge E520 does.

1366x768 on a 14" screen is passable, but not ideal. The vast majority of 14" laptops have that resolution, so the best way to see if it'll work for your needs is to go to a local electronics store (ie, Best Buy) and look at their 14" laptops. It all comes down to personal preference.

If you do want a higher resolution screen + numpad, you should also give the Dell Latitude E6520 a look. It's available with up to a 1920x1080 panel as well.

Just a bit out of my price range. Trying to keep it fairly cost effective as I'm currently an Accounting Student.

Your right on the E420, the main pictures show it with a numerical keypad however browsing reviews online show it without. I guess they show the E520 as well on the same pages at Lenovos site.

I would be willing to sacrifice the Numpad and use a USB one if those are considered alright.

I definitely prefer the higher resolution screens.

1368x768 is comparable to 1280x800 on 14.1" 16:10 laptops. What sucks is Edge isn't offered with HD+ on 14", but that is how they keep costs down. Do you need the newest CPUs? You can find in warranty T410 with WXGA+ for pretty cheap these days.

There are occasionally some great deals in the Dell Outlet on redistributed/refurbished E6520s, so I'd suggest keeping an eye out. These machines come with the same 3-year warranty that new machines do.

Well I will not be watching movies on the Laptop (Maybe extremely rare cases when I have nothing to do and I'm not at home).

It will be used strictly for Word and Excel Processing, Web Browsing plus the Music software.

Reading around online, it seems the 1366 would be fine.. on a 15.6 Inch display even.. which is leading me to get the E520 15.6 inch display.

It's at a really nice price right now in Canada with the Boxing Week coupon code.

I'll take your advice and head down to Bestbuy later on and check out some of the laptops there to see.

I'm used to a full 24.6 inch 1080P widescreen at home, plus I watch movies via my HDTV.

So hopefully the 1366X768 works out, as it is still 720P.

That resolution is fine, it's only in the past year or two that displays have really gotten a boost in pixels. Remember the 17" displays that were 1440x900 and the like? 15.4" screens used to be all 1280x1024, really the screens have just had an overhaul from what they used to be. I'm using a 1366x768 screen on my Hp Dv6 and my only complaint is I wish I had more viewing angles

Should be OK though if you find slightly higher resolution it will be better.

I am using an 14.1" 1440x900 display and it is perfect. Previously I had a 15.4" 1680 x 1050 and it was too tiny.

To me it's not as much about resolution as it is about quality of the screen. 1366x768 screens are usually bottom of the barrel in most laptops. I do prefer higher resolution for multitasking, but you usually get a much better quality screen overall.

To eaches own, that's what I always say. I like higher resolution screens (WSXGA+ ftw) but when I was forced to get a new laptop I didn't have the budget to go for a better screen. I used to say go look at Bestbuy but the odds of finding a 900p screen on a 14 inch notebook at Bestbuy are nill. I think the screens on all those computers are identical. T

That said... I own a Edge 14 which was a predecessor to the E420. The screen is find for simple webbrowsing or checking email. I use it just fine for occasional video editing, capturing live TV, and photoshopping gets the job done. Its plenty bright but the color and viewing angles aren't the best. I think a glossy screen on any 14inch notebook these days is going to be about the same.

In short if you have the budget and good eyes get a higher resolution screen. If not the standard screen on any notebook will be fine for your desired use. I think a higher resolution screen would be a much better deal on a 15+ screen.

1366x768 is fine for 14" and under. My X460DX has 1366x768 and it's fine, viewing angles are decent.

    The aforementioned resolution is fine...

Ultra high res (1080p)for such a small sized screen is unnecessary in my opinion, the on screen text would be too small and you'd have to strain your eyes to read unless you enable increased DPI scaling in Windows 7, which would then negate the gain in working space/area anyway..

1366x768 is perfect for a small 14" display, great for 720p movies and shows and light gaming... On the other hand i wouldn't settle for less than 900p/1080p for 16" and higher....

I'd consider 1366x768 fine for 14", i'd aim for a 1600x900 panel if at all possible, but a 768p one won't seem too bad if the panel has decent quality.

That may very well be true, but for the most part, it's not a very deep barrel where 14" screens are concerned. You do get some more separation where 15" screen are concerned, but not hugely so in my opinion until you change the screen type from TN. As far as 1366 is concerned, I think it's fine. I can use my X220i all day. Plus with a e420 you get the little red bub, which is about as easy to scroll as you can get.
