I plan to buy a OCZ Vertex 3 (60GB) for Windows + programs only, but is it enough? I don't have that many programs, about 20 or so, the largest is probably Photoshop and Office.

How much space do you use for Windows + programs only?

    Thanks a lot.

Depends. How much space are you currently using?

I'm using exactly 40GB with all my programs and what-not. I plan on investing in a spare < 40GB SSD and putting it in an enclosure, or working with USB3.0 for any additional storage. Currently, I have two, 16GB USB2.0 drives I have for tight security items/documents, movies and pictures.

I have a partition of 100GB for my windows on my HDD. I installed a couple of games, around 20 programs and Office 2010.

They almost filled up 50GB! if you are planning to install on an SSD only the OS and programs, I would recommend at least a 120GB SSD, which is also faster than a 60GB one.

60GB is skinny for OS+programs, Windows 7 itself takes up a third of that, and more if you want to allow it to update itself in the future (service packs and all). Microsoft isn't the leanest when it comes to updates. 120GB is plenty for most people.

I would also suggest not an OCZ drive, as they still have a number of issues. Plus OCZ is not exactly known for caring about the customer when issues happen. Intel/Crucial are good SATA 3 drives (Intel 510 and Crucial M4) and the Samsung 470 is also very good albeit SATA 2.

Ok, so an Intel 510 with 120GB is a much better choice?

Or the Samsung 470 with 128GB, just notice the price, much cheaper than the Intel.

Yes. The only advantage the 510 has over the 470 is the "sequential" reads. The 470 has better random read (up to 31,000 IOPS) than the 510 (up to 20,000 IOPS). Meaning the 470 is a better "average user" SSD, with its much faster random reads (like clicking the internet browser, or opening Adobe) than the 510.

EDIT: Here's the Samsung 470 thread here @ NBR:

crucial m4 is probably the best dollar/performance ssd (199/128gb) atm. samsung and intel are both great choices too.

The Samsung cost the same as the Crucial in my country.

    My Vostro 1500 has a 60GB Vertex 2, and after essential drivers/some programs, Steam + MW2, TF2, DoD:S, I still have 18 GB free with Windows 7 Home Premium.
