I'm trying to find where my 2.26GHz P8400 is stable, since I need more clock speed for emulating a PS2 now that mine has died. I'm running Prime95 with an OC @ 2.64GHz, and so far it's reached 71C, with the individual core meters reading 60C. I know CPUs generally like staying below the 70s, but this is Prime95 we're talking about here. Should I be at all concerned?

71 is fine... it'll be alright as long as it doesnt go much above 80. Critical temp for C2D is 95 if i'm not mistaken

Do you have a laptop cooler?

If you have getting 71 C without laptop cooler, then its totally normal.

If it was a P8400 with an X4500, I'd say it's high. But you've got a 9800M in there, pumping out God knows how many watts, so the CPU temperature is going to suffer as a result. As mentioned, the critical temp for a C2D is somewhere near 100C, so you should be fine if your load temps max out at 71C.

Okay thanks. The last time I made a real effort to find a CPU's safe max was with an Athlon 2500+ a looong time ago, so I wasn't sure what's considered safe now.

And yea, the 9800M is a bit of a beast, especially with the OC. It idles in the low 50s.

Notebook CPUs have much higher thermal specifications than desktop chips, so you should be fine.

Actually both desktop and laptop chips should have the same thermal specification because they are both based on the same exact lithography process.

71C is fine, any temperature over 80C is too hot
