I am looking to upgrade my D420's 60GB HDD to a 300GB SSD but aside from the 1.8" form factor requirement, I also noticed that the D420 uses a ZIF (socket? connector?).

Do you happen to know whether Intel's SSDSA1NW300G3 300GB SATA SSD 1.8" will fit Dell Lattitude D420?

    Thanks.

OK, partial answer: It looks like it will NOT fit, because the D420 uses the parallel ATA hard drive (1.8") rather than the SATA (2.5") interface in the D520/620/820.

If you need a new drive then you will probably have to look for a second hand drive and hope that it still has some remaining life.

Some of the old Toshiba 1.8" drives are listed here.

From time to time I've considered getting a refurb D420 then the 1.8" drive issue reminds me that it's not such a good idea: An interface bottleneck at best and a drive that it difficult to replace at worst.

John, thanks for the informative link.

I just found another alternative, which seems perfect, except for the price. That is, add to this a few more dollars and I can buy a brand new modern faster CPU wide aspect ratio higher capacity SSD ultra book...

This price seems much more reasonable but quality/reliability is unknown.

Good find. :) Here are some positive comments on the Kingspec SSD.

You won't get more speed than the interface can handle but you will get improved responsiveness due to the low access times.

128GB is not a lot of capacity (and it's best to leave at least 20% unfilled to facilitate garbage management) but that's still more space than the 1.8" HDDs.
