Use CPU-Z to identify the package of your CPU. Socket 479 mPGA means a socket with pins, in which case other CPUs using this socket will physically fit. However, whether the BIOS will recognise and support other CPUs then becomes the major question. Hi-Grade are showing the T2050 as an option, but not any Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Who is the OEM for this computer? If you don't know this then I would suggest that you use Sandra to find out the motherboard details. This may reveal the OEM maker and their model number, after which you can search their website for that model, what CPUs are supports and any BIOS updates.

Unless you can be confident that a CPU upgrade will work with your motherboard, it will be better to save your money towards a new computer. RAM and HDD upgrades could be worth considering since they can be transferred to a new investment.

the OEM maker is Mitac 8615 chassy.

I actually have an VIA VN890 chipset, shows during boot-up, not an VIA P4M890 as CPU-Z states.

I see that there are several UK companies selling products built around the Mitac 8615 chassis. At first look they all seem to mention the Celeron M and the FCPGA6 socket (I'm not sure whether this is another name for the 479 pin socket).

It is possible that Hi-Grade actually use a slightly different chassis in the model with the Core Duo. I would suggest that you email their technical support.

I have a similar conundrum. I have a Lenovo 3000 C200 notebook. I have already ordered the 2 gigs of ram upgrade (Newegg of course). I also plan on getting a big 7200 rpm drive as soon as I figure out which one is the best. I had thought Seagate, but they get low marks for performance in most of the charts I have seen of their notebook models.
My notebooks CPU is also a 420. I was optimistic that it could upgrade to a core duo or core 2 duo, as Lenovo sells my same model with those chips. But then I noticed two things. The core (2) duos have a 667 FSB and Lenovo has several motherboards for the one model (3000 C200). So I am still in limbo.
Not a big deal as I dont plan on upgrading the CPU until 6-7 months from now.
