I'm in the market for a netbook right now and I was wondering if Pineview is going to perform significantly better than the current Atom processors on the market (Diamondville, N270 and N280).

I've also heard that this update is going to bring fanless netbooks about, is this true?

It's only a month to wait, but I am just curious about the changes that the update will bring.

I honestly don't believe it'll be a huge leap in processing power from the current Atom, so IMHO, no, it won't be perform significantly better. However, significantly is pretty subjective. It's supposed to cut the power requirements in half, but heat generated by the CPU is not the only factor for internal temperatures. They may get into a fan-less situation, but I don't think it will be in most initial netbooks with pineview.

Also, while there's a lot of press about Intel releasing Pine Trail in January, them releasing it doesn't mean instant availability to consumers. I would expect to see them closer to March, but you may get some early birds in late January / early February, but I wouldn't count on it.

The performance will depend on how the integrated memory controller in the new chips is done. Theoretically having the memory controller closer to the CPU is a performance gain, but if its not optimized(to lower costs) or if its used to lower power then it might not bring any gains.

The Atom is an in-order CPU which can gain good deal from having a good integrated memory controller, but we'll see how that turns out. Done well, 30% per clock increase in average is very possible.

I would wait. Official debut is Jan 11th.

    Fanless
    64 bit
    Improved graphics
    Less power usage
    Thinner Designs
Add Broadcom's HD Decoder option for HD playback

At least you get a faster Intel GMA 3150 gpu if you wait. :)

Lol, but the real question is, Why would you want one??? They are horrible and always have been, especially for heat output relative to performance.

not worth it any day.. the processor is still going to be crap and unless u get NVDIA ION , graphics aren't going to be good... CULV notebooks are the way now... doubt that pineview is going to regenerate the dying netbook.

I would wait since its just around the corner.

But ION and CULV are obviously better choices.
