I very recently bought a 512MB card from Dell for my Dell laptop which has since broken. (I bought a 512 MB 64x64 512 MB Module for a Inspiron 600M SystemPC2700 333 MHz SO DIMM 200-pin Laptop Notebook) Can I install it on my T61 Thinkpad or does it have to match the brand?

It will not work. PC2700 is DDR RAM, and all current notebooks use DDR2 (which is not compatible with DDR). Brand does not matter...DDR/DDR 2 does.

It will not work. The dell latptop use DDR memory while the T61 uses DDR2 memory which is not interchangeable.

DDR2 memory is extemely cheap. Look at the Hot ram deals thread.

So the only thing you need to know as far as compatibility is whether it is DDR or DDR2?

RAM for desktop is different, size number of pins. For notebook RAM DDR is I think 184pin and DDR2 is 200pin. PC3200 is the only speed shared by DDR and DDR2. DDR2 and DDR3 share PC6400 but don't think any DDR3 out for notebooks (excluding GPU's and not upgradeable so not issue).

Basically, but not exactly. You also have to take into account the speed of the memory.
