    it should work.
the 2700 frequency will be downclocked to a speed that your PC can run.
Just make sure that the pins and format of ram and everything is compatible.

    would this work:

I have Samsung 256MB DDR PC2100 CL 2.5 (not sure what all this means)

This one looks like a match. Could I buy this one from Amazon to get 512MB RAM? Does this look fine to you?
    http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-256M...9?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1194442301&sr=8-2

Thanks so much for you help :)

The ram in that amazon link appears to be desktop ram, and I am assuming you want this ram for a notebook. Well desktop ram is not compatible with notebook ram so if you want this ram for a notebook then it will not work (however it will work fine in a desktop).

If you are looking for good deal on ram check out the ram deals thread; go down to the section with DDR1 ram(DDR2 is not compatible with DDR1 specs) and then chose any of the pc2700(DDR-333) sticks. If you have a slower PC2100 stick already installed then both will run at the PC2100 speed.

Yes it should work. If you have some 2100 and some 2700 the 2700 will clock down to 2100 speeds.

I haven't done too much desktop upgrading lately...are all the desktop RAMs the same? I don't think they are, so you may have to make sure of the pins, and stuff.
Maybe telling us the computer's make and model will help us.

Yes, you can even throw in a Pc3200 module and it will downclock to Pc 2100 speeds. I noticed that on Newegg, like a year ago, the Pc 2100 sodimms were much, more expensive than PC3200 sodimms. After doing some research, I found that they are backwards compatible. I have 2 1GB Pc3200 corsair modules in my Dell Inspiron 8500 for like a year now, and it has never had a single problem.

Yes, it will work. I've added a PC-2700 512 MB stick to my old desktop in addition to its original PC-2100 512 MB stick. It works brilliantly.
