I was considering a 72% gamut matte screen over a conventional matte screen for my next laptop. Is it worth $175, and will it look that much better than a conventional matte screen? Aren't conventional screens around 60% gamut? My primary use is gaming, internet, some photo editing, and MS Office.
Should save the money and buy a 24" external monitor instead of spending $175 for the 72% gamut?
On a side note, why don't they offer 90% gamut 17" matte screens (I know they have 90% 15" screens). 72% doesn't seem like it's worth $175 over a conventional matte screen at 60%.

No I don't think thats worth it.
I was actually just looking to upgrade my laptop with a 72% gamut WUXGA screen - priced at about 135$. And, I've already sold my current WSXGA+ glossy screen for 80$.
I think you can actually find most of the modern 95% gamut, 15.6" screens for around 100$. Just do it yourself! -
I don't think it's just the color gamut but contrast, brightness, viewing angles are better too.

Still, $175 is a lot of money for what is basically a garden variety screen, especially when you take into account how 24" monitors of comparable display quality can be had for about $200.

$175 is pretty steep. But if a user isn't comfortable swapping their own screen, and if they have warranty work, you have to remember to put in the original screen because if they decide to just swap out the unit then you lose your screen. They don't care if you paid extra for it.
Is a 17" matte 72% gamut screen a worthwhile upgrade for $175?
