I have a T420 and apparently I need a display port to HDMI cable to connect it with my TV. I have a DVI-D to HDMI cable, is that the same thing?

If the connector does not fit on both ends then it's not the same...plain and simple.

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
...? So you need a DisplayPort to XX adapter, but you have an DVI to HDMI cable?
You can do DisplayPort to DVI. -
Don't listen to Nemix.
HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort are each separate things, but your DVI-D to HDMI cable will work just fine for video if your laptop has an HDMI port. If it only has a displayport you might need an adapter.
DVI is capable of sending analog (VGA) and digital signals in the same connector. HDMI uses the same digital interface, and is pin-compatible with DVI connectors that use the digital channels. -
No apparently my laptop has a display port.
I need a display port to HDMI cable.
I accidently bought a DVI to HDMI.
I realize now though, DVI and display port are two different things and I bought the wrong thing. -
LOL...jokes on you dtd00d.
Anyhow, technically Display Port > HDMI > DVI-D.
HDMI and DVI-D are interchangeable but both cannot output to Display Port.
However, Display Port can output to the lower grade video signals. -
since when can DVI-D carry audio?
doesn't DVI-D also have a resolution advantage over HDMI?
at OP: yes, dvi is SIGNIFICANTLY larger than display port -

For whomever cares, DP supports Deep Color, along with HDMI. DVI (even in it's DL flavor) doesn't.
Is a DVI-D and a display port the same thing?
