I live in a place with a lot of voltage/power drops, spikes, you name it. I think it is this that has recently killed my onboard NIC on my motherboard for my desktop PC. I am definitely getting a UPS for that. Do you folks think it is also a good idea for a laptop?

    yes.

Its good to have at least a good surge protector, but a UPS is even better.

If you live in a dangerous area, sure. Although a surge protector would be more fitting since you already have a battery :D

Better to let a UPS take the hits rather than your notebook though.

I think a power conditioner would be best in your case, it has surge protection and at the same time stabilize the power. It's not expensive, under $50.

I would suggest a UPS over the power conditioner because during a brown out the UPS can supply the desktop/notebook adequate voltage until you can power down the machine. Power conditioner only smooths voltage (a more sensitive surge protector).

Thanks for the replys so far. I thought the UPS also acted as a line conditioner? What brands make the best, most reliable UPS? I want one that will do as it says. I have had basic surge protectors in the past and they did not protect the equipment from a surge. How big(i.e volts/watts/amps) of a surge protector do I need for my T61p? I am really new to UPSs, what specs should I look for? Thanks.

APC, Triplite, Belkin, etc... look at customer reviews.

In my country ,sometimes we face to brownouts & blackouts. I brought APC UPS for my Macbook PRO. It's working well.

For consumers, I'd say APC, even for businesses, they're one of the best.

APC has been making back up power systems for ages, go with them or GENERAC/Guardian power systems, however I dont think you need a Generac or one of their three phase switches to handle this small power issue.
