I've been waiting for it since forever...
And recently I heard it's been shipped..
any idea when it will be available in the market?
-
... I am waiting for a cheap >64gb SSD... but 1/2TB on a single 2.5inch drive is great too!
-
Yeah I'm waiting too. Planning to get 2 of them in RAID 0 for 1TB storage
Where the heck are they though - can't find a single retailer that even lists them yet, let alone showing stock -

Zepto is listing the Samsung 500GB as a configuration option. But that's not much help if you only want the HDD without the notebook. I've yet to find the Samsung 320GB being sold in Europe as a component, never mind the 500GB.

I'd be waiting for it, if I weren't buying a laptop TODAY!!
Teehee.

I am waiting for the Samsung and the Hitachi 500Gb drives. My Voodoo can fit two of the 12.5mm thick Hitachi harddrives
I am not really interested in capacity, but speed.
I need something faster than my 7K200 raid array.
I assume the samsung 500gb drives are going to be faster because their data density is going to be greater than Hitachi's 5k500 drive.
I emailed Hitachi multiple times prodding them to release 10,000 and 15,000rpm notebook harddrives.
they keep telling me no, but I still want one. I want faster load times, I dont care if the capacity is 10Gb per drive. Speed is more of a priority for me.
I love the noise of 15K drives. They sound amazing. I have an array of 4 137Gb 15k Hitachi Ultrastar's in raid in my tyan dual opteron server, and they sound amazing when defragging.
Anyways, I need to figure out how to build a SAS to SATA adaptor, so that I can use two of Seagate's 10K Savvio drives.
Too bad its easier said than done

Quite annoying that this drive isn't yet available.
I remember Samsung were quite poor getting their 1TB F1 drive to retail too - it was months late. I hope this drive doesn't end up going the same way -
It's available now as an external harddrive.

Is there big difference between 5400 500G(Hitachi) and 4200 400G(Fujitsu)? Only for Daten storage, not for system. The 400G Fujitsu costs now 110€.
-
It could be the 12.5mm Hitachi for all I know and in which case it wont fit in my laptop. -
Anyone know the answer to the above?
-
I called them and they told me they used a hitachi hard drive for the 500gb version
-
Good work! You just saved me $300
-
i got tired of waiting for samsung, and just ordered the buffalotech one with the hitachi drive in it from compsource.com for $293. should get it this week, as they've already shipped it.

Wow, it comes very close in performance to the 320gb 7200rpm black edition drive from western digital.
The 500gb should theoretically be the same speed as the 320gb, but it is indeed a slight 8mb/sec faster than its 2 platter counterpart. This is good, considering the 5k500 from hitachi is exactly the same speed as its 320gb counterpart.
Samsung is moving on up, which is good, 3 platters in 9.5mm and now the fastest 500gb notebook drive, pretty amazing.
I hope they release a 320gb 7200rpm drive soon, to show the other manufacturers what the Korean giant has instore.

Another set of results shows the HM500LI is more in the 320GB performance range, which is what I would expect.
I've just noticed something interesting: The Samsung datasheet has the title of "Spinpoint M6(3D)". I deduce the 3D means 3 disks and suggests we might also see a Spinpoint M6(2D). Indeed, that better test result has me wondering whether the 2D is already in circulation. Production of the latter would be less expensive.
The best way to find out is to weigh the drive. The datasheet for the 3 platter version shows 115g. 2 platters should be close to 100g.

I've tested this hdd to various others on OSX, results are here:

Interesting results there. They show the Samsung is OK on the read tests but below average on the writes. Maybe the challenge of fitting three platters into 9.5mm results in compromises.
However, for most users, read performance is what matters.

looks like it's finally available. i just ordered one from mwave.com.
Is anyone waiting for samsung 500gb HDD?
