I could play 1080p video and have 8-12 browser tabs open on a 2nd generation Core 2 Duo.

Thats partly a function if memory subsystem too. If it's a dual channel 1600mhz system with an ssd then yea the i3 is adequate. If its single channel system or HDD then it may show intermittent slowdowns between tabs.

The processor is fine. The major thing you have to concern yourself with would be your ISP connection.

    stop it.

that was supposed to be taken facetiously. to be sure, both your internet connection and that lenovo are fast/powerful enough to play "1080p" YT videos with other tabs open. i can personally attest to, and you should heed Tsunade-Hime's advice.

I'd second that. I can do the exact same thing with my ULV C2D, which is even weaker than a regular C2D. Let alone a Haswell part.

@OP: The CPU and all the other parts in such a laptop (some Ultrabook, I bet) will be fine. Just make sure you get a laptop with a decent display and you'll be set; ie, get something with a 1080p or better display. Would be helpful to get something with 1080p or better if you're planning on watching 1080p videos, right? ;)

Depends which video and which 5-8 additional tabs you want open. :)

Also depends on RAM (chrome devours it...) speed and amount (8GB DDR3 12800Mhz or higher) - and, the O/S we're talking about (Win8.1x64).

And; which storage subsystem all the above was based on (a 'real' MLC SSD or mSATA or NGFF connected nand device - or; a mickey mouse version like a crippled eMMC 'solution').

The cpu itself is more than fast enough (today; for your workload) - make sure to balance and enhance that power with an appropriate and fully fledged platform to ensure it continues to be usable for the foreseeable future (at least 2-4 years).

    Good luck.

I was able to run a 1080 movie and have more than 20 tabs open on my old elitebook laptop with a u7700 cpu running at 1.33ghz with single channel memory running at 533mhz.

That must have been painful... I can just imagine switching between tabs: probably faster to walk to the next website.

    How much RAM? No SSD?

Playing a downloaded video or a streaming video?
