My two year old laptop came pre installed with the irst program.
I just recently purchased a Samsung 840 512gb ssd. I know Samsung has it's own magician software but I remember threads from a year ago saying that it is preferable to leave irst installed.
My question is, should I uninstall irst before migrating to the ssd?

A modern (Win8x64 PRO) based computer without IRST 12.5 installed operates like a 1999 IDE 20GB HDD did with Win98SE. And that is with an SSD used - not a HDD...

Highly recommend to use the latest O/S and IRST version your platform supports to enjoy the fastest and most fluid experience possible.

(Migrate? Do yourself and your SSD a favor and do a clean install - cloning went out of style with Star Wars... :)

    Good luck.

So I should have irst and Samsung magician both installed?
And I'm still a fan of star wars so I'll see how migration goes first :p

When I moved to only having SSD drives in my two laptops (see sig), I finally concluded that IRST was only important if you also had a HDD in the laptop together with the SSD.

So I didn't bother loading IRST, and it worked out just fine.

BTW is IRST 12.5 a program or a driver???

Meaning exactly where can I find it??? i.e. in the Windows Control Panel's "remove program" section???

Or is IRST 12.5 perhaps found in the Windows Device Manager???

Enquiring minds want to know. :D

Intel Rapid Storage Technology is a driver, and it is listed in Add/Remove programs. However, on your T530 (like my W530), you won't find it because it is not supported for mobile 7-series (Ivy Bridge compatible) chipsets. Instead, for those of us running Ivy Bridge systems, Intel IRST is incorporated into the Intel 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller, which is listed in Device Manager.

Actually IRST has both a driver and program, it is possible to install only the driver using the F6 install files through the device manager and it won't actually show up in the list of programs. You can use it for ivy bridge as well, it is listed in the list of supported chipsets after all.

From the readme of the 12.5 version of IRST:
