The past few days I haven't taken my laptop anywhere, so I've just left it on my desk closed but still on. When I need it, I open it up, do what I need to, then close the lid again. Is this bad for any parts of it? Sorry this is kinda a n00b question :). Thanks guys!

No, that should be a problem at all.

Yeah, I sometimes leave mine on for 6-8 hrs at a time, which may include 4 hr sessions of processing videos, though I switch it off at night. A laptop should be perfectly OK idling.

Just make sure it's not scheduled to do anything processor intensive - I read somewhere on the Asus forums about a guy leaving his notebook on with the lid closed. The heat generated actually melted the casing on his screen.

You might want to think about hibernation instead.

Not at all. Now, if you left it like that for say, 6 months, the battery will take a beating (the max amount of power it can hold will fall)

Huh. Hows that? Modern battery charging systems baby batteries like you won't believe. Unless your mains is having multiple failures every day and the battery is forced to work on and off the whole say six months. Then yes, it will affect the battery. Otherwise no. All should be fine.

He is talking about the natural decay of the cells. Since they will lose some charge, and the adapter with then charge them back up over and over again, it can reduce the number of cycles you have away from the wall. There is no memory effect, to be sure, but since lithium cells have a range of cycles they can go through, it can reduce the effective life of the battery.

Yeah, most of the times, I left my notebook plugged on all day long, no prob at all. And the battery is good as well.
