Okay good I haven't turned my laptop off like in a month not even a restart. I have noticed when ever a start my laptop on and put it back to sleep it takes longer.

The only thing that happens when you're leaving your notebook on for a long time is that the battery will wear down. Hence I suggest considering to remove the battery when not needed.

Removing the battery won't make it last longer that is just a myth.

When you put it to sleep everything stays in the memory so it will run more sluggishly than if you did a complete shutdown. Restarting and shutting the system down will both clear the memory, if you are noticing that your notebook runs slower doing either will bring it back up to speed.

Personally, the only time I shut down my notebook is when I'm transporting it from one place to another otherwise it's always on.

Hibernating just writes everything from the RAM onto a special file on the hard disk; usually it is hidden in the C:\ directory and called hiber.sys or something like that. Continuous use of the hibernation feature doesn't do anything to your hardware, but Windows will become slower as time goes on as its pre-fetch folder fills up and it takes longer to find things. The solution is simple; restart every once in a while.

this question was always on my mind.i leave my desktop on for like ever i never switch it off i just restart it at time when its running slow but very rarely though.

good to know its the same with laptops too and theres no prob if you leave it on constantly. but im not clear about something. what if your downloading something and you leave it on if it "sleeps" will my programs still work ( will my file(s) continue to download or will tht be stopped once it enters sleep mode ??

also is it necessary to keep it on sleep mode cant i let it just run normall even when not using it ? whats the advantage of sleep mode or hibernation ?

i quoted this from another thread where gophn here, says its bad to leave it on constantly ?? so whats the right thing ?? leave it on or switch it off...now if theres nothing being done then i guess you could switch it off but if your burning some dvds or downloading some stuff it obiously has to be kept on. so is that okay ?

cool, I never turn my laptops off...I

have one system that has pretty much been running 24/7 for around 5-years. It's a Dell Inspiron 5000 in case ya wanna know.

More damage is likely done with the constant heating then cooling (think expansion and contraction due to temp changes) when you turn a system off and on all the time then if you let it remain at a constant temp all the time.

I shut them down if I am taking it somewhere but other then that they are always running. I do let the display turn off after about an hour or so depending on the machine's function. I do that because backlights are a different story and can be a PITA to replace. Though I guess lightbulbs that have been left on for decades can be fine, until turned off then they die.

My take on the battery issue and removing it when plugged in is if it is true then there is a big problem in the charging tenchnology used in the laptop. If the battery is still receiving enough current to heat it up after it's charged what is the purpose of monitoring the charge levels in order to prevent over charging? It just does not make sense they would still be designing then that way...
