Is it normal for hard drives to make a high pitched whine when inactive?

Ive narrowed my noise to the hard drive...when its active, there is no noise, when its inactive its really effing annoying. like, if i scoll up and down really fast it goes away. also, its magnified if it is against a hard surface.

i dont think its the same thing as the C2D whine.

any ideas? im sick of them telling me to return it and try another one, clearly thats not working! im just curious if this is how all laptops work; i dont want to make a lot of fuss about something thats just a limitation. i guess i have freak sensitive hearing too, heh.

Scroll what ? a web page or something ? Scrolling a web page has very little impact on the hard disk activity, instead it requires CPU power, therefore it seems to me like the CPU whine.

ahhh...its completely silent when loading windows, if that says anything. unfortunately, RMCLOCK doesnt support this platform, and i cant do anything about the whine through the computer bios or software. so frustrating if it is indeed the c2d whine.

Seriously, how many threads are you aiming to do on all these noises you have already explained/found on your laptop ? :)

You've done like 20 threads now, are you aiming for 100? 10000? :p

It feels like you've been making one new thread everyday atleast all different ways to say that you laptop makes a noise in one or another way.

I don't know why everyone refuses to belive that they have CPU whine, but that is exactly what you have. When your CPU enters its sleep states it lowers the power draw which seems to effect the compenents around it. You may find luck disabling the C4 sleep state, but other then the only effect is has on your computer is... none.

All electrical parts such as chokes and coils make noise. Many capacitors and resistors make noise as well. Normally these are designed to be out of the human range of hearing, but we can see that someone screwed up with the recent motherboard design for the C2D.

yeah, but maybe a new laptop will let me actually disable the option that causes this noise. this current one has no such option to make the sound go away...i refuse to believe they ALL have this problem. seems like people that go w/ lenovo are happy.

i have to agree, this is much more likely your processor than your hard drive based on what you have said before. Scrolling a webpage will really have little effect on your HD

core 2 processor have this issue when they switch between power states

If you try to look for the problem in the wrong area you will be disappointed, and considering that you have described your issue over and over. Its clear the problem is probably not the GPU noises or HD issues.

but none of the normal ways to fix it work...enabling bluetooth or sound recorder does nothing. and there are no software fixes for it because nothing is compatible with this, and there are no BIOS options for a fix of any sort. so annoying! its also not constant, sometimes it is there, sometimes it is not.

Download RMClock, turn it on, and select a managment system. Then go into the advanced section and you can disable whichever sleep states you want. Disable everything and then do what you normally do for a few days. If it goes away then you have to figure out which sleep state is doing it by enabling one at a time and using it like that for a while. If turning them all off doesn't work, and you have them all set up right, then you have a different issue.
