Is it poosibel to replace XGA with SXGA screen on a 12" subnotebook?

Does someone know if it is possible to replace XGA with SXGA screen on an old 12" subnotebook like Thinkpad X30 or X40 or Dell X200/X300? I am not afraid of a technical job like replacing the matrix or inverter, but I don't know enough to understand which obstacles on the way (like the need of new bios?) are to be expected.

My googling wasn't very successfull.

 

If the original laptop had a option for an SXGA or higher resolution screen then it subsequently means that such a screen was made for the particular machine.

If such is the case, if you can find a copy of the higher resolution screen, say, on ebay or wherever, there's a good chance that it should be plug and play (to the extent that you'd just have the swap out the old screen - maybe a driver update too?).

If the original notebook did not come with such an option it may get... difficult.

 

I think the reason why you can't find it is that they never made it.

I've never really seen a 12" laptop with such a resolution on its main screen.

I really can't understand why you would want to do it though, unless you never had one because it's already pretty small the resolution and I'm sure that you would need 40/20 vision to read the the screen... (Or the company could face a lawsuit for making people squint alot and causing eye injury)

 

Higher res= more pixels. It does not mean you HAVE to make fonts smaller. You can keep the physical font size big. The higher res would then mean that fonts are less pixelated and more clear, making it easy on the eyes.

I'm only aware of the thinkpad X6x tablets with a 12.1 SXGA+.
I do wish normal 12.1" laptops had SXGA+ option

 

Yeah, I just did a bit of investigation and neither the X200 or the X300 have come with anything greater than an XGA screen. And I think the T40 is a 14.1" device?

 

Yes, both the T30 and the T40 are 14.1"

 

IBM/Lenovo's X60 and X61 were/are available with an SXGA+ screen (1400*1050).

Both don't have SXGA as an option, only XGA.

There ARE 12" SXGA screens for notebooks on ebay! Besides Thinkpad X60 and X61 they are also used on Toshiba Portege 12" tablet PCs.

I also googled out some other evidences of existence of 12" SXGA notebooks (from LG and HP) but I have to make sure first that those are not misprints in specifications.

The question still remains, if it would be possible to make 12" SXGA screen working on a subnotebook with XGA screen!

 

they may make use of different lcd cables and connections. that may be a problem.

 

SXGA 12" screens I have seen on ebay are 30 pin. (Don't know how relevant this fact is for the problem here).

 

Those are X60t and X61t (tablet laptops).
