I'm considdering starting to build HTPCs for other people and I want to have something unique and something that pulls a small amount of power so I want to use laptop parts, and looking at the AS3820TG-5454G32n
it does seem to have the perfect core components with a Mobility Radeon Hd5650 GPU and Intel i5m CPU. But buying a $1500 laptop to tare it apart is a bit of a waste. Is it possible to buy just the laptop somewhere? Or are there other companies that are selling low quantities of laptop motherboards?

You could always buy the whole laptop and then sell the parts you dont use on ebay to make some money back after all it would only be things like the screen and the plastics.

The only problem with using laptop parts is that you will have to build a custom case and you will be limiting the upgradeability of the system.

Yeah, I don't mind building custom cases, this is actually part of what I'm looking to do since I'm not happy with the HTPC cases out there today. I basically want to build HTPCs that look something similar to a closed Macbook Air.

And I have local companies that can produce these, the problem is getting the electronic hardware.

Upgrading won't be an issue either. Mobility Radeon HD 5650 does bitstreaming so there isn't really too much to upgrade to.

I guess I could buyand then resell the leftover parts, and that would be ok for the prototype stage, but further down the line I'd prefer something a bit more secure.
