Ok I dont want people to shake there laptops and break it. But this morning before I went to school I picked up my laptop and shook it. Then when I came home I noticed that my laptop wasnt making the clicking noise anymore. Could it be possible to solve the hardrive clicking noise by shaking it?

What clicking noise? You mean the clicking hard drive issue, where some drives make a soft click when they go into the powersave mode?
No, I'd say shaking is a bad way to fix a clicking hard drive. -
I know but now i barly does it and its more quiet. IDK why its doing it less. Do you have any other ideas that could stop the clicking without doing something like shaking your laptop?
-
Well, it is a power save option, so my guess is the drive is just not in the lower power state right now, and nothing has actually changed.
-
The "Click" noise occurs in platter HDDs because of the way it retrieves and writes data. Every HDDs have couple of circular platters where it stores data and a mechanical arm called a "head" that reads and writes the data onto the platters. The "click" sound is when the head touches the platters to access data.
If your HDD never makes a noise it means its broken..
-
I have an HP. Do you know anyway to stop the HD from parking?
It still makes the sound but it seems more quiet -
God no! Don't shake the laptop!
The HD is a mechanical device that stores data on a magnetic platter using read/write heads that hover just above the platter; if you were to open it up the mechanism it would be similar to a vinyl record player. Thus you can imagine that if you were shake it, you would risk causing the R/W head to damage the platter, thereby compromising the entire drive and rendering it useless.
The reason why the noise stops is because most modern drives feature accelerometers that allow the drive to sense rapid movements so that it can park the R/W heads away from the platter, thereby protecting your data. Now you can see why shaking it is not advisable. -
I'd get my backups in good working order ASAP were I you - my money's on the hdd failing in very short order.
-
Oh god. How can I check to make sure my HD is still working and that I didnt break it? I didnt loose any files and it still makes the clicking noise
-
Well what should I do? -
Shaking the drive is the best way to silence your drive, it completely kills it, therefore it makes no noise
Seriously, do not shake your harddrive especially when it is on. If the system drive make noise, use software like hdtune pro, or hdparm to change the AAM settings for noise/performance

Well how can I make sure that my HD is still ok and its not broken?

Check this out. -
What this automatic acoustic management feature? I am scanning my hardrive right now
-
-
it says everything is Ok but I am doing an error scan since the benchmark is done. Also if there are no errors does that mean my HD is not damaged? I looked at device manager and it says device working properly.
-
If you shook it when it was turned off, then I do not think there would be any damage.
-
yes it was off when I shook it. But I dont hear the clicking noise that much though. It kind of scares me
-
Yeah, I don't think you have a problem with your drive. If you're REALLY scared you can run a test with the drive manufacturer's tools, but honestly, if you'd done damage it would already be painfully slow to use or maybe entirely unusable.
-
Alright well my computer is still very very fast and it doesnt seem to have any problems.
-
Also When its doing a scan it shouldnt make a click noise because it isnt idle right?
-
There should be a kind of quiet fast ticking, at least there is on my drive.
-
well I am kind of scared because I havent heard a clicking since I was doing the scan but my hardrive is ok, there seems to be no damage but i am very worried
-
If shaking it doesn't work try hitting it with somthing heavy !
-
So what should I do if I dont hear the clicking anymore but my harddrive still works perfectly? I havent heard it in awhile since I did a scan ( still scanning)
Btw I also have a protectsmart hardrive in my laptop. Would that help protect my laptop's hardrive? -
It's probably just fine. I would just backup everything important to be safe.
-
Ok well now I hear the click and it more quiet now which is good. Thank you all for your help everyone
-
This thread is epic. I second using something heavy, but will elaborate and say to use a 32 oz ball pein.
-
You don't shake hard drives for the same reason you don't shake babies.
-
-
...I was thinking because they might throw up, but I guess that wasn't right either...
-
if you shake that thing while writeing you could break i t

The only cure is getting a SSD.

Feel free to close this thread mods. I should stop listening to advice from unkown users here. Someone said on another thread to pick it up and give it a good shake. Thank god I only did it for like 1-2 seconds
Lol I'm an idiot
Is it possible to cure the clicking noise by shaking it?
