You can always use your own faceplate so why do you need a generic one? Why make your life difficult? ;)

Most if not many face place would swap out the replacement faceplate with the old faceplate making it look excatly as before. I done it plenty of time to IDE/Sata drives and they fitted perfectly well making it look like it was the original drive. You just have to take time taking the faceplate off so you can change the faceplate. Those clips are delicate and strong do so with care and it will work.

Actually the face plates are specific to the design of the drive not the unit its place in. So although it may be the right size, it could end up being offset making it completely useless as a replacement.

This also means the original is unlikely to fit the new drive as well: it may cover the hole, but it won't work mechanically because the connection points don't match. So unless it says its specifically made to fit the unit you're replacing it with, you're probably out of luck.

Then I am a outlier since most of mine have been fine with faceplate swap.

Because the machine it would go in to does NOT come with a face place and is not contoured.

Then most SATA drives come with a plate, just be sure it specifies it in the description as of course some do not. There are plenty of drives out there to chose from. I added one to my Gateway P79 and when ordered had the vendor put one in the current NP700G7C.

Well heads up, there is a new spec called BLu Ray XL which lets you read and if it's burner, write 100gb Blu Rays.

I don't think some folk are getting it. The burner may come with a face plat, but they still may not fit in the slot of all laptops. Some are slightly off-set and because the tolerance is so tight they won't fit snug. It may be the correct cutout size, but there's no way to make the fine adjustments so the mechanic can work.

My disc kept hitting the door because the claps on the burner held the face plat up just a bit too high. Mine was slot loading, so the cutout has to be aligned perfectly. This may not be so critical with tray loading types.

I guess you could do a quick search on e-bay for a used part, or something from the same series.
    That's a bit rude, isn't it. :p

Not really new they've been around for some time now just under the radar. You can get up to 128GB discs for one time write. I've got the slim and the above 12.7mm drives.

I am sure it is the media costs that are keeping this at bay. At Apr. $25 per 100gb disc, as below, you could just get 500gb or more USB driven HDD's. That and who needs to burn that much data on a one time disc as well?

The most popular search engines are remarkably efficient nowadays, but you still have to point them in the right direction. The ones on the websites, are not so sophisticated.
