Is it possible to get a "new" engineering sample?

Just got my Q9200es from ebay today(took two weeks to ship) for my Qosmio x305. should I be concerned about what appears to be fingerprints and tim on the CPU? shirleyfu1117 listed the cpu as "new', is there such a thing as a "new" ES?

i think there are no "new" es cpu because they are tested for stability

 

They can be new and unused. They are used for testing by Intel and by motherboard manufacturers to test out and develop their hardware. It is really lame of someone sold something as new and left thermal paste on it.

 

She said they left the thermal paste on it so customers would not complain that it had not been "tested".

 

shirleyfu1117 is he. I think under new they mean never used before testing. I think it's fair - it's better than get a broken cpu and waste time on replacement. Though where else you can get such proc for that summ?

There are at least 2 suppliers that sell qx9300 oem's for about $500 and I am sure they do not have fingerprints, thermal paste and tape adhesive on them. That alone should be worth the $250 premium over an ES chip that has all of those things--doesn't exactly instill confidence when you see fingerprints on a cpu.

 

How did they test it, otherway? Don't take it to heart - i think there is nothing to worry about

 

Anyway, he says "Every CPU will be carefully tested before shipped out." I do not know how it may be tested without touching it and putting thermal paste on.

hmm..,maybe surgical gloves? There is a reason that you are not supposed to get the oils from your fingers on computer chips, that is why they make people don booties, suits, supgical gloves and masks in clean rooms where computer chips are made. I have read cpu installation manuals and they explicitly state that you should be careful not to touch the cpu with your bare hands because the oils on your fingers can contaminate the chip, especially if you touch the pins.

Click on the thumbnail in the op and click on it twice more for maximum resolution and look at those finger prints.

 

I guess that's shirley's mistake for not cleaning it up a little better. As an end user, there's no way to guarantee that an ES is absolutely new (shirley's testing aside); assuming it works well when you get it, how do you know?

I wouldn't be too impressed with the fingerprints and thermal paste residue either, but I guess that's part of why the QGNGs sell for less than an oem.

 

Excuses don't get much lamer than that and probably just came up with that after you asked. It is really unprofessional not to clean it up before shipping and leaving that to the consumer.

 

+1 on that one. If they used this excuse on laptop, then anyone in their right mind would call BS.

If it is too good to be true, it probably is.

 

I'm not even a professional seller, but when I sell one of my CPUs to someone, I make sure the die is absolutely spotless before shipping it out. It takes all of minutes with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol.

I can never get all the residue off by rubbing it with alcohol. When it dries you just have to wipe it a little bit with a clean cotton ball or q-tip.

 

if you are so picky, why are you purchasing a second-hand, ES cpu??? You could very well get an original boxed CPU that is guaranteed to be factory sealed. If you pay 1/5.th of the original price, you should not complain...

i bought my qx9300 from him. Very nice guy. I don't know why you are complaining. If you want "perfect clean", buy an OEM.

 

Seriously...just slap some thermal paste and see if it works or not. The surface of the die has nothing to do with whether your CPU will work or not.

 

First of all I am not that picky, as I have bought an ES, secondly, it was listed as a "new" ES. Thirdly, OEM QX9300's are selling for around $500 right now, that is only double what I paid for this Q9200.

Did it took him two weeks to ship it to you after you paid for it or it did just take two weeks for it to arrive? If it took him two weeks to ship after payment, then negative feedback is deserved, but if you gave him negative feedback just because of how long the item took to arrive, then the negative feedback is undeserved because the guy has no control over that.

 

Yes, and I have bought over 300 items on ebay, mostly gold coins, this is my first cpu and have only left negative feedback one other time. A seller never shipped the 2-4 coin american eagle gold proof sets. All of my other ebay purchases have been shipped in a timely manner, usually within 2-3 days have recieved most items and they all have been packaged and delivered as was described.

 

How many of those other items came from Asia, though? 2 weeks shipping from China/HK/Japan is fairly normal for standard small package air mail. Of course, that could vary depending on the exact shipping method used.

 

Shirleyfu1117 said usually arrives 5 days but the shipping delay was not my primary concern. The oily fingerprints all over the cpu that could easily be seen with the naked eye the moment that I opened the package is what set me off. Any moron can handle a cpu with their bare hands and get oily fingerprints all over it--not the seller that claims to be an authority on cpu's.

I feel like a negative feedback was earned and will be a service to future and present potential buyers.

 

that's not true, I see many CPUs for sale (even on this forum and I will give you a link in a PM if you want) with fingerprints all over them.

I guess people like to touch their cpus a lot.

But I can see the argument for giving bad rep, you paid a lot of money and they sent you a mess to clean up.

 

The negative feedback seems harsh, but maybe shirley will start taking the time to clean up the cpu's a little better or handle them a little more carefully.

To the OP - if the isopropyl doesn't work, you might try Articlean, as I think it does a great job of eliminating any thermal paste/pad goop and restoring a mirror finish.

 

shirley emailed me and wants to give my money back plus $50 to boot if I return the processor and remove negative feedback. i told him that I did not want to return the cpu but would remove the feedback if I knew how.

 

If you really don't like him you could forward that message to ebay and he would be finished on there.

 

I've seen some negative feedbacks where the comment was removed and instead said something like "the buyer and the seller have agreed to remove this", but it will still count as a negative in the seller's statistics. Someone else may know more about how exactly it works.

 

Lol not so clean CPU warrants a negative on Ebay. Hope you at least contacted the seller to try to work something out before leaving the negative. If Ebay had a DNT list you would be on my list if you just slapped the 100% seller with a negative without even contacting him first (which does not seem like you did from the seller's reaction).

 

yes, I emailed him about the condition of the cpu immediately after recieving it and he said that it was like that so customers would know that it had been tested. I probably should have given a neutral and noted the discrepencies and would if I had it to do over again.

 

From what i understand is that shirly is quite a well known seller for the chips, i dont think you should negative, i've heard very good feedback.

 

The "so customer would know" part is as bogus as it gets. He was just too lazy to clean it. But still does not warrant a negative. What is done is done however.

 

Yeah true, all in all i would really only negative if it was a dud non operational chip, but i've got the tollerance for that, some people are different i guess, .

 

In case anyone was interested, I just changed shirleys feedback to positive in exchange for a $50 refund.
He is back to "100%"

 

It's good to know that feedback can be changed after the fact and that those "100%" feedback scores can be influenced by a seller who is proactive 'behind the scenes'. Of course, from a buyer's standpoint, if it's a deal, then I guess it's a deal, right?

for the price of a new chip I can buy 2 ES chips... it's good to take that chance.

 

I would prefer buying a foolproof OEM processor instead of an ES which has a high chance of not working even if it is more expensive... don't complain for what you get for half price... if you wanted a clean one you should have paid $500 and got a clean QX9300 and not an ES which is tested and not clean...

Your logic escapes me...first you tell me i shouldn't buy an inferior ES then you tell me it is half price? Which is it, did I get a good chip at half price or a faulty chip at full price? $250 is the current price for Q9200 based on what numerous Q9200 Es buyers have reported paying so I paid full price Sean.

 

Actually ES chips have a better success rate since manufacturers usually test them better before they send the samples. It's a marketing issue. It's important that ES chips don't fail. And of course serious sellers always retest the chips before they sell.

I second this. Unless your buying off ebay from a guy with no feedback that has a pic of a robocop on an item listed as a q9200 cpu, it's pretty safe.

Well after complaining the seller gave $50 back to me, I'd say there is a point that was made.

 

99% of ES cpu's are new. better then new because they are tested. boxed cpu's are not tested, therefore boxed ones have a higher fail rate.
And why should a ES chip be "better"? that only happens very rarely when they have unlocked multipliers. they are usually the same thing except for the inscriptions. and price is not a cpu quality or feature it's just what you pay for an item. If I've 2 equal items with a 500$ price difference and if I don't have a brain damage I'm gonna buy the cheaper one.

By the way, I bought a T7800 chip from shirley and it had some kind of fingerprints mark on it, but the chip works fine... I cleaned it best I could with alcohol and put some thermal paste. If it works, who cares what the die looks like ?
