and if so, how much would it cost?
I may consider it in the future.

If so, would a quad core be possible or only core 2?

If the cpu is not soldered, it's possible.. If the laptop in question is the one in your sig, then yes.

As for the quad or dual, it depends on whether a quad core ever gets released for the same socket..

Your laptop is upgradeable. You can upgrade your t5750 all of the way up to the T9300, T9500 if you so desire. I do not think your Bios supports anything higher than a T9500, since your laptop was never sold with any extreme mobile processors from Intel.
Unfortunatley the new quads are going to have a new socket, or a different version of the current Socket P. That means you will not be able to upgrade to them. However you can still upgrade to a speedy core 2 duo processor.
All you need to do is update your bios to the latest revision, and than proceed in taking your system apart to upgrade the cpu.

Generally speaking CPU can't be upgraded in light laptops, this includes some laptops with 12" screens and any thing that uses a screen less than 12" (i.e. netbooks).

Any other type of laptops can be upgraded, though most of time and for most users the upgrade is not worth it, because the gain in speed brought by the upgrade won't be noticed.
